Republican nominee for governor Ernie Fletcher is running a radio commercial in Western Kentucky that says Democrat Ben Chandler "supported Al Gore, a man who wanted to take our guns away."
There is no evidence that Gore, the former vice president, has ever advocated the confiscation of people's guns.
When he was the Democratic nominee for president in 2000, Gore supported licensing of new handgun owners, background checks for gun buyers, limiting handgun purchases to one a month, and child-safety locks.
Fletcher campaign manager Daniel Groves defended the ad.
"He strongly advocated more gun control," Groves said.
"What he wanted to do would have in effect taken away people's guns."
Asked how that would happen, Groves said, "He was for significantly more gun control, which in many cases would take away folks' guns, particularly law-abiding citizens."
Asked to explain cases in which such controls would amount to confiscation, Groves said, "That's pretty common knowledge. ... Anyone in Kentucky, they know that."
Groves was asked whether the campaign is relying on incorrect perceptions held by voters. "No," he replied. "There's a lot of printed evidence of that." Asked to provide it, he said, "That's my answer."
Gore said in his acceptance speech at the 2000 Democratic convention, "I believe in the right of hunters and law-abiding citizens to own firearms. But I want mandatory background checks to keep guns away from criminals, and mandatory child-safety locks to protect our children."
Chandler campaign manager Mark Nickolas said, "They're trying to create a separation where there is none. This is one of those examples where the Democrat is just as good as the Republican on an issue the Republicans think of as their issue. It goes to Ernie's continued lack of veracity in this race."
Fletcher, the 6th District congressman from Lexington, says in the ad that the National Rifle Association gave him an A-plus rating. Chandler got an A, which the NRA says is the highest rating available for non-legislators. He is the state attorney general.
