Do these pictures indicate a problem? With the ammo? With the pistol? The primer strikes look like mini volcanoes.

The ammunition is 9mm Remington FMJs and Blazer Brass, FMJs.

The pistol is a .40 S&W Hi-Power , converted to 9mm. The barrel is from EFK and the recoil spring is 16 pounds.

Thanks for any opinions.

Looks like the hole in the slide is bigger then the firing pin.

Did it do the same thing with the factory .40 barrel?

Could be excess headspace on the aftermarket barrel letting the primer back out and slam into the breachface.

Take the barrel out and drop some loads in the chamber and see if the rear of the case is even with the rear of the barrel hood.

rcmodel, the .40 did not do this. I will change it back over to .40 tomorrow and fire a few rounds to be sure.

I'll check the alignment of a cartridge with the barrel.

What would be the cure if it is excessive head space?

I agree with rcmodel's first sentence. In a couple of cases, the firing pin is not even centered in the hole, indicating it is too small or the hole too big. As a guess, it looks like a 9mm firing pin was installed in a .40 slide.

Some cases show an off center strike, indicative of too large a chamber or lot of "slop" somewhere in the barrel/slide/frame fit.

What would be the cure if it is excessive head space?Send the barrel back for a refund.

If the chamber is too deep, there is nothing you can do about it.
