I decided I want a cheap-eating carbine.

There are the Destroyer Carbines from Spain, chambered in the 9mm Largo. But those are 9X23mm, not 9X19.

I have seen some Destroyer Carbines redone to chamber 9mm and even found one in a gun store near my home redone to take .38 Super.

I have also seen an ad in the Shotgun News that does .45 ACP conversions of old Mauser milsurps.

Oleg - you might think about one of those CZ bolt-action carbines in 7.62x39mm. As cheap as a 9x19 to feed, and a heck of a lot easier to find

(I've never heard of a 9x19 Bolt-action carbine - all of the 9x19 carbines I know of are autoloaders)

How 'bout a Marlin Camp 9? $275 on most of the auction sites and lots of fun.

Bolt action. Or rolling, falling block. I want a manual action 9x19 with a 16" barrel and decent iron sights. Centerfire but cheap to feed, with no kick and little muzzle blast.

Sounds like an interesting exercise for a Contender barrel. Bet Bullberry could gen one up. Not EXACTLY a falling block or rolling block, but seems fairly do-able.

Edited to add: Just about any 9mm ammo will be comfortably supersonic out of a 16" bbl, so while actual BLAST may not be an issue, it will most definitely have a report. Of course, if you're handloading, you could create almost anything. Imagine loading 200 grain .35 cal rifle bullets over a pinch of Bullseye. You might be able to shoot 'em, then run downrange and catch 'em with a mitt.

Now you've got my imagination going Oleg.

You said "cheap-eating" carbine, does the carbine itself need to be cheap too?

The Spanish Destroyer is great, don't know what it'd run you to rechamber it. I handled one at a local shop, very handy and only $150 or so. Shopkeep said I could fire "anything 9mm" out of it: 9mm Luger, .38 Super, 9mm Largo, .380 ACP, etc. I brought up the question of headspace, and he rolled his eyes. I've since heard that it's possible, but quite unsafe to fire those rounds in a Destroyer, as the only thing holding the round in place is the extractor. Can you "set back" the barrel and rechamber? If that'd be affordable, Destroyer would seem a great option.

If the rifle doesn't need to be cheap, www.eabco.com makes custom small-receiver falling-blocks. Runs about $700. For about the same price you could get a Thompson Center Contender multi-barrel break-action carbine, if you could get a good deal on the receiver.

Most interesting option: building a rifle on a Martini Cadet action. Kind of a cross between "Zulu" and the wundernine. Numrich lists .310 barrels w/ sight at $61, and receivers at an "are they for real?" price of $21.

I don't know how doable or vexing it would be to build a 9mm rifle from those parts, but if you did build it I'd dearly love to see it (smile).

You already have the shorty-Garand I covet desperately, so I strongly encourage you to build a single-shot 9mm so that I can enjoy it vicariously through you.

Best o' luck to nash geroj, -MV

Below is the link to the guys who do the 9mm FAL conversions and the .45 ACP Mauser conversions.

Perhaps they could also do a 9mm Mauser conversion?

I know you said bolt action, but have you considered a .38spcl lever action?

As for bolt actions, aside from the Spanish Destroyer (probably your best bet), the only other reasonably available pistol cal. bolt action rifle that I can think of is the Ruger b/a .44 mag rifle (M77/44?).

Perhaps they could also do a 9mm Mauser conversion?Different head dimensions. The .45acp works for this because the head is almost the same size as the 8mm Mauser, so no alteration of the bolt is necessary. http://www.rhineland1.com/MAUSER/m6.jpg
$131 for the parts to make your own conversion. Might just be worthwhile.

"$131 for the parts to make your own conversion. Might just be worthwhile."

Where from?
A friend has a single shot .45 ACP Mauser that he got tired of pretty quick. I bet he would like it better if he could set it up as a repeater.

I don't get much out of it myself. A pistol round in a big bolt action rifle is kind of poopy. Just as well have a .22.

People have been shooting 9x19 in the Destroyer Carbine for years. I'm told it isn't dangerous at all, though it may wear out your extractor eventually.
Destroyers used to go for $59 in Shotgun News, but you pay quite a bit more nowadays.

I asked this question myself awhile back.

I would also like a cheap bolt action 9mm.
