Nipples cleared and screwed in the easy way

Each time I shoot a pistol, I completely disassemble it. Ive found out the fastest way to remove nipples and screw them in is with a round toothpick. I break them loose with a nipple wrench then stick a round toothpick in the nipple and twirl it between the thumb and forefinger. Before replacing, I put a dab of bore butter on the threads and again insert the toothpick and twirl them in. This lets me not waste caps on clearing the cylinders. caps are becoming scarce in this area so I think it is worth wasting a toothpick from time to time.

Nice trick. Thanks for the tip.

Bore Butter is a lubricant, not a corrosion preventative. It's ability to prevent rust is limited to covering the metal and keeping oxygen from reacting to form the oxides. Using it as a thread lubricant on the nipples is fine for the short term, but you'll be better off in the long run with an on-purpose ant-sieze compound.

I am aware that bore butter is a lubricant and a damned fine one. My pistols dont sit around long enough to rust. How do I prevent rust? When they are nice and clean and dry, I spray the entire pistol with silicone heavy duty. I live in Missouri Ozarks and it has worked for me all these many years. All I was trying to do is assist folks with a chore.

That's a great idea, thanks for the tip!

I use bore butter as a thread lubricant also. Works great for me, too, but like you my pistol tends to not sit too long between outings.

I've also found that the nipples really don't need to be screwed in tight. Just barely snug helps them come out easy.

I've always used Bore Butter on my nipples (and breech plugs) and applied it to the threads with a tooth pick, but since I have a supply of Knight's Breech Plug Grease I decided to switch because it seemed prudent. Because it's thicker, using it does require more caution about keeping it out of the flash hole so as to not cause a blockage. Any breech plug grease should work well.
Also, after soaking the nipple I use a tooth pick to remove some of the residue from the inside of the nipple cone.

T/C Gorilla Grease. It smells better.

my nipple wrench is long enough that i can twist it the same way you are w/ the toothpicks but thats a neat tip to remember . on my thds I use a high temp grease.
?? how do you clear the oil or what ever you are using to protect the chambers between shooting sessions. Snaping caps is to dry the chambers as much as clearing the nipples.
before pouring powder. At least that is take on it and why I snap caps.

I don't usually snap caps prior to shooting because I don't put oil in the chambers or barrels.
So I'll just put a nipple pick to good use.

I shoot the cylinder full of silicone. Ive never clogged one. If my powder dont go its because of a faulty cap. Ive got a collection of nipple wrenches that Ive made. I made one out of a hard bolt, ground off the threads, and can use a rachet wrench on the head. Id send pics but cant post them to the forum I have aldo used it to impact the nipple with a ball peen hammer.

I just use automotive antiseize lube on the threads.
Snaggletooth, have you ever hat a cheap toothpick break off inside the nipple? If so, whatdja do to get it out. I'm just clumsy enough to break one off.

Either use a nipple pick to push it out, pick it out with a pair of tweezers or it could always be burned out using flame.
