The nut that holds the forearm onto the barrel has come off. It is a small round nut that had two sort of wings soldered to the barrel. One side stayed on the barrel but broke off from the nut. The other simply unsoldered from the barrel. I've spoken to several local gunsmiths but they are all afraid to even try putting it back on because the heat required might ruin the barrel.
Has anyone had this problem? And if so what remedy did you find that worked? The Savage 99 is one of my favorites and I'd really hate to retire it unless I have no other choice.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Or parts replacers?

Anyone who calls himself a "gunsmith" should be able to soft solder or silver-solder anything you want put on a barrel without ruining it!
