Jeff Cooper's Favorite Combat Rifle?

I read a lot of what he doesn't like but was trying to remember him stating a favorite. I am thinking it was the BM59 but I am not certain. I was just over at "Jeff Coopers Commmentaies" and was wondering what the "Guru's" preference was. Just curious. BTW, that is some enjoyable reading if you haven't been there.

MP-44, finally, an easy one to answer: M1 Garand.
"I believe I take your point, but that does not mean we are in total agreement. The greatest pistol was indeed the 1911, but the greatest rifle was not the 1903, but rather the M-1 Garand. (The .30-06, of course, does indeed stand alone)."
Jeff Cooper, Letter to Kirk S. Freeman [eeeevil alter ego of El Tejon], Chicago, Illinois, May 11, 1993.

Do you have the cite for your signature quote?
"When fear is removed, the arrogance of uncertainty is disspelled. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to prove yourself in any form of combat. By learning how to fight, you learn not to fight."
Thanks.

FWIW In Survival Guns by Mel Tappan a number of people, Cooper included, were asked to describe their ideal survival battery. His No. 1 hunter was the Rem 600 .308 Scout ("Scout 1") but his fighting rifle was the BM59. He did add that he would be happy with an M1 or an M1A as well. Of course this book was published almost 30 years ago and preferences can change.

I asked Jeff Cooper a couple months ago what he thought of our current military rifles. He said something to the effect: I don't think they are very good, but they seem to be doing OK with them. At least the Marines are. :D

I agree that Col. Cooper has stated the BM-59 to be an excellent weapon yet he was still most fond of the Garand. He also liked the H&K 91 as a battle rifle due mainly to the rifle's reliability. This is from stuff he wrote 25 years ago.

El Tejon...on what did you have a disagreement with Col. Cooper, pray tell? In 1993 you were just a young man...perhaps your youth was misguided in some way...?

Harold, I was BORN of the Old School!:D Young at 23??? Hmmm, depends on what one has done perhaps.
I have never been misguided, merely bewildered from time to time.:D
Drue, this is the cite you cited:
"Rifles: BM-59 (.308), or SIG 542 (.308), or M1A (.308) or M1 (.30/'06). In effect, any good .30 cal. sturmgewehr. 4 mags (20s)."
Mel Tappan, SURVIVAL GUNS 436 (1980).
Molon, that is Sifu (Wing Chun Kuen) Phil Redmond of Detroit, Michigan quoting his teacher Henry Cheung. It is from memory and I do not know if it is complete. I wrote it down in my notebook/copybook for Wing Chun.
Mr. Redmond has an excellent website thingy though. Maybe I should look it up?:scrutiny:

If the current El Tejon (3rd iteration of the evil known as KSFreeman) is like this at this age, imagine what kind of havoc he reeked upon the world when he was 23!!
My vote is for the M1A...
