Hey guys, I shot my first black powder revolver yesterday at the range. The fella wanted to try out my Detonics 1911's, and in return, he let me fire his Pietta 1858. WOW, what fun that was!! I really want one now but before I jump in, is there any brand thats better liked than others? I've seen 1858's made by Pietta and Uberti. Do yall have a preference? Thanks in advance. Kevin.

I prefer Uberti but thats jsut a personal preferance. Pietta's are favored by many folks as well.

The Pietta 1858 Remington Target Model that's currently on sale at Cabela's for $199 is probably the best deal on the planet.
Plus they also have a very liberal return policy.
Read all of the favorable buyer reviews.
Better hurry though because the deal may end at anytime. :)

+1 on the Cabela's sale revolver. I have a target Pietta and it's a nice piece, can't beat it at $200.

I use Pietta's, simply because that's what the shop had in 1851 Navy. I prefer the Navy barrels over the other types. Remind me of some cap guns I had when I was a kid (not cap and ball, just cap:) ).

I haven't found anything wrong with the Pietta brand. I have had the spring break on one of my pistols, but the other one is running strong and it wasn't even the mainspring, just the cylinder latch spring.

There are some technical differences between the Pietta's and original guns, and I don't know how much this will effect you, or how well other brands pull it off. The 1851 Navy and the 1860 have the same grips. IIRC they weren't meant to. IIRC further, the 1860/1861 grips are right, and they are wrong on the 1851 Navies.

But don't take my word for it.

I shoot with guys who use Uberti and Piettas 1858's and no one has issues with theirs. I'd go as far to say there is less difference between the two companies than is worth worrying about. Both make quality products.

IIRC Pietta use slightly larger nipples than Uberti, meaning #10 caps stay on better.

PS and another +1 to that Cabelas special. It sounds pretty darn good.

Get a Pietta Shooter's Model. It's a reasonable balance between price and accuracy.

The gentlemen have already given good advice. The only thing I would add is that if you are not too worried about being authentic, a stainless steel blackpowder revolver is a lot more forgiving about cleaning than a blued gun. A bucket of soapy water will work to clean any gun, but with the SS gun you don't have to be as concerned about making sure all the water is rinsed off, etc. Not sure if is is worth the extra $100 or so, but you may want to consider it.
