Looking at Makarovs on GunBroker (I swear I'd buy three of the things if I had the money) I see this entry

"Polish 9x18 Makarov JUST IN Low Reserve "

I think to myself "Polish Makarov? Hmmm"

I click on the link and see this...

Gunbroker "Polish Makarov" (http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=12907652)

What the heck is that thing? Certainly not a Makarov!!!

People trying to dump their crummy Polish pistols trading on the Makarov's good name... irritates me...

Yeah, a lot of those people will use anything in the subject line to get you to look at the pistol. In this case, there was a small reason -- it's chambered in 9mm Mak.

The guys on there call ANYTHING from FEG a Hi Power, and usually it's not even close.

I don't know what the fuss is about ... maybe its because I spend too much time on the Makarov boards, but whenever I see "Polish Makarov" I automaticaly think P64

It doesn't help when the well respected surplus sellers pull the same stunt...

...is surrounding the P-64's that SOG has got in (and several others also).

Over at the Makarov.com sponsored forum, I've yet to hear a positive range test (safety's dropping by themselves the most common complaint).

Many look good, but most reports are of defects and returns.

Bottom line, with Bulgy's available at similar prices (www.dansammo.com has some sweet looking ones) I think a real Mak' is an easy choice.

Best wishes,

That's a P-64.

According to Small Arms of the World (1977): "This double action, blowback operated pistol is smaller in size than the Soviet Makarov pistol but is chambered for the same 9mm cartridge. In some respectes, it seems to resemble the Walther PPK more than it does the Makarov.... The system, however, is actually different than either the Makarov or the Walther.

The guy's keying on the caliber for the name.

I've seen PA-63s marketed as "Makarovs" too. I think they are trying to fool people into thinking that it is a real makarov so they will sell better...

I can't tell you how many times I have walked into a gunshop and asked if they had any "Makarovs" and the guy says "Yep, here is a Makarov right here" and proceeds to show me a FEG PA-63.:banghead: I don't think you can call anything that is chambered in 9mm Makarov, a Makarov pistol any more than you can call a BHP or Beretta 92fs a "Luger" just because it is chambered in 9mm Luger.

People are stupid and gunstore people are often more stupid than just regular stupid people.:D Actually, I don't really think they are as stupid as they sound most of the time. Its just that they think you are even stupider than they are and they think they can sell you a FEG PA-63 as a "Makarov" because they are just stupid enough to think that you won't know any better. That sad thing is, sometimes they are right and they do fool people. I guess it is the price you pay for being more stupid than the stupid gun dealer.

MAN! That was a lot of STUPID!
