POI and powder charge

Hey guys, I went to the range yesterday and was trying 20 grains of 777fffg in my .36 navy, instead of the usual 17.5 grains.

Well, the point of impact was way higher. I don't have any actual data but is must have been a couple of inches. The target was at 12 yards. I went back to the previous charge and was able to score hits again. Would a ~3 grain powder increase really raise the POI that much, or was it all in my head and I just kept missing with the bigger charge?

use 15% less 777 than your given load amount for regular BP. More punch per given volume measurement than BP.

I love the ease of clean-up though !!

I know about the 15% reduction. Still they claim it's safe to shoot up to 20 grains of 777fffg.

My question is, will a powder increase of ~3 grains will raise the point of impact by a few inches, or was my aim just off? I missed 12 consecutive shots at a water bottle at 12 yards. I took it down to 17.5 and took it down on the 2nd shot. I believe all the shots were going over.

Either way, if the POI was so high with 20 grains of 777 (23 grain equivalent of real BP) that would be historically accurate right? as these guns were made to shoot at around 75 yards?

In regular revolvers I've found that going from .38Spl to .357 Magnum results in a LOWER hit. Some long time shooters said it's because the Magnum bullet comes out before the recoil can lift the barrel all that far. I've seen the same thing with shooting factory and reloads from my TC Encore short barrelled 500S&W.

In your case it's lifting it more sharply before the ball comes out. There must be some sort of cross over point or function of bullet weight and velocity to barrel movement that varies with the charge pressure.

According to the spl/mag example of mine if you were to up the charge far enough then supposedly it would get to where the ball would exit before the barrel can lift enough. I'm pretty sure you would not want to stuff that much powder into it to achieve a Magnum like load though..... Even if it WOULD be in the name of Science.... :D

I use 18.5 of 3ffg at 25 yrds for POA POI for 50yrds w/ the same POA/ POI I use 25 grn 3fffg.

Just a guess, but we are talking about a 10% increase in powder (not sure what the equates to in velocity) but... given that the bullet is moving faster... it will drop less at a give range... so I would expect it to shoot higher with more powder, even if it was bolted to a rest.
