Give Me Your Opinions On Winchester Dynapoint

I grabbed 1000 rounds of this stuff the other day.

There are a few that have had failures to fire, but the powder charges seem pretty consistent.

However, my main question has to do with terminal effectiveness. They have a pretty small hollowpoint. I was told though that these were designed to deal with rabbits in Australia.

Squirrel season is coming up August 15th. Can I count on this stuff to work as well as the Winchester Xpert I came to love, but can no longer find?

It should be fine. I personly like CCI or Federal. Do you have a bolt or semiauto? If its a semi you may want to make sure it feeds correctly first.

are these the .22magnums?

Anything in 22mag will destroy a squirrel... at least this had been my experience. Dynapoints take their heads all but off just like the rest of the 22 mag loads I've used. I prefer 22lr to tell you the truth. Less messy.

These are .22LR, not magnums, and the rifle is a bolt action.

Are you looking to destroy the squirrel or to do head shots and gather meat?

I don't think that the hollow point at those velocities are going to make much of a difference, like say a Stinger would. Just try to make the best shot you can.

I wonder why somebody buys ammo and then asks if it works. I would think the other way around would make more sense.

I grabbed it up while the grabbin' was good was all. It's been hard to find .22 anything here recently.

Joshua, after trying several brands and styles of .22 Long Rifle ammo I really liked using the Dynapoint for squirrel hunting. I don't think it made as great of a difference on gray squirrels where I hunted but we would also come across larger fox squirrels on occasion, and they performed great on those. Accuracy was satisfactory with my Remington Speedmaster and Anschutz bolt rifle. Worked well enough on the odd feral cat or woodchuck too.
Hopefully they're accurate enough for your needs. I have quite a bit of odd lots of .22 ammo I've collected over the years, nice to diversify and try different loads for different small game. I have six .22 rifles and they all have their preferences. The Winchester Dynapoint or the Remington Subsonic hollowpoint are my usual picks now. Plus my Ruger Mark II shoots the Remington Subsonics well, as a plus. CCI's Small Game Bullet (SGB) is good for me too.
As anyone else would, I will take a head shot on squirrels as first choice, but chest shots aren't passed up.

Mr. Smith,

Yes, you will be fine using that load for squirrels.
Especially if your bolt rifle really likes this load, because you are more than aware, each gun, each barrel, has a mind of its own.

For the new folks,
Joshua M. Smith is referring to Winchester Dynapoint, Product Symbol: WD22LRB

This is a standard pressure load, which many of us find preferable for both rifle, and handgun use.
What many of us were raised with, and have found through investigation and verification is, standard pressure often gives the shooter the best accuracy.

After all, it does not matter how ultimate-extreme-exotic-super-duper-gee-whiz a load if, if the darn thing does not go where aimed, or cycle in your gun.

Being a bolt action, just like a revolver, Mr. Smith's gun is not dependent on the loading to run the gun.

Sir, if you don't have, please consider borrowing a .22 revolver such as S&W Model 18, and hunting squirrels with this Dynapoint load.

Sometimes, a grown person should not have this much fun...
No such thing as too much fun.

A pellet rifle will take the squirrels so any .22, even cb caps will work (and would be a better choice if you are shooting them out of trees).

As to Dynapoint I tested some a few years ago that was very close to Federal gold match in terms of accuracy, at a fraction of the cost. I still have around 24,000 rounds left from that lot#.

Years ago I bought several cartons of Dynapoints when a local Kmart was getting out of the guns and ammo business.

These bulk bullets shot as well as Federal Gold Medal out of my M12 and were deadly on rabbit and squirrel in my Savage boltguns.
