Miami County Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

Police: Man Wouldn't Let Go Of Knife

PAOLA, Kan. -- Police in the Miami County town of Paola are investigating a shooting that involved a law enforcement officer Tuesday evening.

Officers confirmed that the shooting occurred at about 6:30 p.m. at 408 South Gold St. Police were called to that address after a 911 caller said someone was breaking into an apartment. When officers arrived, they found a man inside the apartment who was armed with a knife, KMBC's Martin Augustine reported.

Police said the man came at two officers and a struggle ensued, which is when one of the law enforcement officers shot the man. Police did not say if the shooting officer was a Miami County Sheriff's deputy or a Paola police officer.

Officers involved in the struggle were treated at a local hospital for injuries they received in the struggle. The man who was shot was taken via helicopter to a local hospital. There has been no word on his condition, but police said his injuries were serious.

Agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are at the scene to look into what happened.

The only problem with this is that they let him get close enough to hurt them.
