[THe Dove]

I made a pistol rack and want some comments from the field. Is this a good idea or bad one? I made it out of a 1X12 and some wooden dowel rods. See pics. Will this damage my pistols?

I have seen similar designs used by vendors at gunshows. My only concern is that the dowel might break allowing the gun to tumble from its location to the floor below damaging the gun.

Use oak dowels if you are concerned. I would only add... space the dowels farther apart.

I have a similar setup in my safe, but I built mine a little differently. I used a piece of 1x6 and the 6" side is flat against the back of the safe on the top shelf. The dowels were installed at such an angle so when the revolver or pistol is placed on the dowel the bottom of the grip rests on the shelf. The dowel isn't really supporting the weight of the gun, just keeps it from falling over. I have about a dozen handguns on one rack, and all you need is one gun on each end to hold the rack up in place. I used two different sized dowels and placed them pretty close together - works great.

My point was its fun to build stuff who cares what you can buy, hell alot of times I spend 4 x as much building something rather than buying it. I guess I get a sense of accomplishment you know what I mean.

Not fancy for sure, but very functional. This is a second one I'm working on, but you'll get the idea. I had a couple of small dowels break off on one end of this one that I tried to use for .22s, and they were just too fragile. I still have some room left on this one too.

These photos were taken out of the safe with the rack on top of a book case so you can see it better. This is just how it sits in the safe though. I also have a smaller four gun rack I made for a smaller safe that was made just like this one. One drawback is that you have to position each dowel for a particular gun if you want a real good fit, but usually they are close enough for guns of similar type, like all small revolvers, or all large semi-autos etc will usually fit on the same one.

When it is in the safe, all you need is one or two guns on the rack and it will stand up, to remove it, just take the guns off and pick it up.

Call me a buzz kill if you like, but I'm paranoid about resting the weight of my firearms on a dowel in the barrel. It might come from my days of rimfire competition where we NEVER cleaned our rifles in the week before a match. But I'm paranoid that the introduction of a foreign object into the barrel might fowl the leading/buildup thus causing accuracy issues. Me personally, I would think of another way to rack them.

I DO like that brass framed BH though - nice pistol! :)

Good usable idea, but I think it could be better. My 2 cents.

I would use a hardwood dowel. With a softwood one, the ends might shave off or splinter and leave pieces inside the gun. Another idea: if you have a metal lathe, turn down a length of brass rod to use for your dowel. Chamfer or round the end to keep from shaving brass off.

That pistol is a 125th Anniv. Colt 45 that I bought back in 1990 with my Dad (we split the cost). It is without a doubt one of the most sweetest shooting handguns I've shot.
