Seventy-two people are stabbed or robbed at knifepoint in Britain every day, official figures have revealed (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/lawandorder/5741371/Knife-crime-is-on-the-rise.html).

Predictable.

Also predictable is the fact that they now want to ban knives. Then forks. Chopsticks. Fingers. Legs.

Then someone will invent a Robocop like exoskeleton and they'll start banning tools and appendages all over again.

Geez, you'd think at some point they'd just make the stabbings and shooting and robbings illegal since people are obeying these gun and knife laws so well.

This is obviously impossible. Britain has been a crime-free society ever since they got rid of those horrible guns that turn people into killers.

It's really sad how the UK is going so bad and stupidly Orwellian. I fear it's going to take a really bad catastrophe (riots, looting like Paris had recently) to wake them up to reality about crime (and effective ways to fight it) and self defense.

At the least always train and arm all your cops so they are used to carrying firearms and not nervous/trigger-happy when they do carry them. Yeeesh. An unarmed police officer is only somewhat better than a extremely well trained but unarmed security guard. Lots of disadvantages there which doesn't help keep the public very safe when dealing with violent offenders. Still much respect to the good cops in UK who can't carry a gun normally on the job. You're very brave lads.

A Home Office spokesman said last night: “Crime and violent crime have fallen by a third in the last 10 years but gun, gang and knife crime continues to devastate families and communities and we remain committed to tackling gang culture, and gun and knife crime.

A one-third reduction in violent crime in 10 years would seem like commendable progress, but the UK appears to periodically fixate on whatever form of crime is being sensationalized by the media at a particular time.

I don't believe British papers print the truth about much of anything. I also think the British government spoon feeds the press exactly what they want the general public to hear or read. They disarmed the general public long before there were papers or new broadcasts. A good article to read sometime is the USSC Heller case.

Go figure, the millions of citizens who complain about the violent crime dont matter to the government.
Look at the most violent crime ridden areas of the US, Chicago, New York, LA (actually several cities in CA), New Orleans LA, Washington DC, what do they all have in common, the most restrictive gun laws in the country.

Wait, what? Louisiana has some of the most liberal gun laws in the country with state-wide preemption.

I lived in England in the early 80s, while serving in the Air Force, and loved it. Unfortunately, the UK has indeed become more and more Orwellian. Apart from the gun ban, equally alarming developments have occurred: most Brits now live under the spectre of a pervasive video monitoring system, and emails are routinely scanned by the government for indications of "terrorist" activity.

They're suffering the death of freedom by a thousand tiny cuts.

Nice topic for justifiable harumphing, but not really on-topic for THR.
