Yup... ain't easy territory to wave the banner of the Second Amendment... but... here I be. I'd much rather be out in the sticks and enjoying the best of creation's treasures.

Keep up the fine efforts. When I can... I've been tinkerin' with redoing a Hawken kit gun. I think I'm going to do it up "in the white".

Which Hawken Kit Gun did you buy ?
I had an Investarms ten years ago from navy Arms , nice littel .50 gun , not very Hysterically correct for Hawkens but was a fine shooter nonetheless .
Even TC aint realy Hawkens , but they are very nice too . And definately shooters !
So , you have noticed you and I live in the gun stifling Northwest have ya , hee hee he , yup , pretty bad here .
I lived in a 3 foot by 8 foot closet on Pike and Pine when I was 21 , I packed in the open downtown , got lots of looks . Today you would get shot by the Police for doing it , no doubt .
Tenino aint too bad but I need to move back home to Alabama , where they apluad you for wearing un-concieled . Texas is the same way .
Do that stuff here and they think your a terrorist ? Huhhh ?

In the white huh ? You ever seen the Vinger Acid treatment in the white, very cool .

Sincerely, Das Jaeger:)

The kit gun of mine is a T/C Hawken kit which someone else originally owned and assembled. I snagged it up for a song. With some TLC, I think it'll look pretty nice. It was "browned" initially. I've scrubbed it off with some "Bar Keeper's Friend" (Thanks BCRider) and some mineral oil and some nylon scrubbing pads (equal to 0000 steel wool). It needs some polish work next... then some stock fitment and refinish work. I haven't shot it yet, but it appears solid enough. A good shooter is paramount in my book... historical correctness is nice, but not as critical.

LOL Sadly... this is the land of sucking on a Govt. nipple within this county, especially within the city here. I had to laugh a few months back... my helper at work was telling me that his girlfriend thinks it'd be a good idea for him to consider buying a gun. 100 days in office and one of his most rabid supporters isn't feeling as safe as she did before he gained office. He says he's running for my house when the Zombies start coming. LOL I got news for him... they're all around us already.

Yes indeed , LOL , we'll see how happy the happy voters will be soon enough as the stuff hits the fan so to speak .
If they run to my house , they are targets , and Edible , hee hee hee . :D

I too could care littel about Hysterical correctness also , accuracy speaks to me mostly , and definate reliability is a must have too .
Cant go wrong with TC, great platform to build on , anything they put out ,
top notch stuff and very accurate .
Now all ya got to do is actualy get some time to do it , dive in and make her nice looking and shooting .
I hope you post some pics of the project too .

Sincerely , Das Jaeger

I'm going to jump on/highjack this thread a little.

Last I heard, you had not shot your rifle, Jaeger. I wondered if that changed yet. I have the Flintlock version and I have a range report from yesterday. First time I shot mine.

First, I think that if I had to do it all over again, I would get the percussion version. Probably less hassle. I went through two flints in about 15 shots.

The first three shots were about 5-6 inches below point of aim, but using both a Lee R.E.A.L. 380 grain conical and a Speer ball, the group was about three inches at 50 yards. Not bad considering the first time I shot the gun and was also not used to the flintlock action spewing smoke just inches from my face.

The fourth shot presented a problem. I thought I had put powder in it. Apparently, I hadn't. After several flashes in the pan, I waited until a friend with a pullet puller showed up.

Also, the powder I was using, being a cheap-o, was excessively dirty. I started to have fouling problems at the vent. We even had to take the lock off to clean up the vent area.

However, once I found where it was shooting, adjustment was easy and the gun was right on at 50 yards and shooting just a tad low at 75 yards with ball and conical. About three inches low from the 50 yard hold. My buddy wanted to file the front sight a bit. On one of his guns, he has a front sight about the height of half a matchstick now, he likes to file so much. (He also is dead on with it!) Being reluctant to screw around with it, I declined his generous offer and just held the sight where I knew the ball would go.

I started with 80 grains 2F, tried 85, raised the impact point, but slipped back to 80 grains. Those 5 little grains were really whacking me. Don't know why, but it seemed like I was doubling the load with those 5 more grains. Odd.

Anyway, the Lee R.E.A.L. and round balls really shot well in this one. It is a deer-taker for sure. For that matter, bear, elk and anything else you can creep up on or get within 75 yards of. I'm sure it would also do nice stuff at 100 yards, but we did not set anything up at that distance, and by that time, I had been there about 5 hours in the heat and was ready to head home. (Ah glorious air conditioning! :p )

I'm switching powders and seeing how that does it for the problems I had.

Oh yeah, ordering a bullet puller, patch worm and fouling scraper on Monday.

The Doc is out now.

Inlay work on a piece of wood that nice has got to be intensely unforgiving. That is some really nice craftsmanship. Beautiful gun.

I been gone for awhile, jsut re-visited thsi post and did not realize it had gotten any responces since my last one .
Ummm , Thanks !

No Doc , have yet to shoot it , too much goin on . Been doin not much but workin . Also , had you bought the percussion model, you could have bought a Flint Lock lock later to go into it with no Modifications. Unfortuntely , buying the Flint Rifle first , screws you out of that now . :banghead:

Inlays are from Dixie Gun Works sixshootinsam .

Thanks Fellas , Das Jaeger

Das Jaeger did you stain that stock 1st? or just using 26 coats of Tru Oil give it that color?
I probably will stain my Zouve stock as it was stained cherry about 30 years ago, want to bring it back to walnut.

Love the BLO. I always love BLO. It brings out the true beauty of the wood better than anything else as far as I'm concerned.

I went through two flints in about 15 shots.

I'll wager that's the work of the infamous Pedersoli stiff frizzen spring. It's not an inherent defect to flinters, and it CAN be fixed. There are many threads on this over on the traditional ML forums.

I've had problems with the narrow little Pedersoli patent breach too. I ended up getting in there with a drill and widening it up from both sides--a bigger powder chamber and a wider flash hole. I was getting way too many failures after a few shots.
