Actually the Steel Framed ones were produced in smaller quanities late in the 1860's so either of them are correct.

I've seen one that was steel framed but converted to fire a .32 caliber rim fire catridge, probaly converted during the early 1870's

Hey VoodooChile,
On the photo date 09/15/2008... pistol on the bottom... what is the red stuff on the caps/nipples?

flmason
July 13, 2009, 06:47 AM
Just a quick bump...

Anyone know what that read stuff is on the caps and nipples of VoodooChile's revolver?

Some sort of waterproofing method, maybe?

arcticap

He mentioned in his loading thread that he melts some candle wax on his nipples to seal them.

Hellgate

They might be "cap guards" that are short pieces of plastic tubing that slip over the caps and keep them seated on the nipple after firing to prevent cap jams. They can be made from aquarium air pump tubing and scissors.

I enhanced the photo with MS Picture Manager to 200% & 400%.
It looks like red wax, especially the nipple at the 9 o'clock position.

I read the link, it's most likely red candle wax.

@articap - gotta admire your forensic use of Photoshop. :-)

@Hellgate et. al. - Is no one worried about heating up caps with hot wax? I could be being overly sensitive about that issue, but having one bullet hole in me (.22 caliber, nothing serious) I can attest errors hurt, LOL!

Hellgate
July 14, 2009, 06:00 PM
Having dripped a lot of wax to seal shot into the open ends of poorly crimped shotgun shells I can attest to the fact that the flame is far enough away from where the wax drips that it oughta be safe to do. I can see getting wax outside the intended target though and onto the cylinder, clothing, floor, etc.

flmason
July 14, 2009, 11:18 PM
@Hellgate - What about the heat of the wax setting off the cap?

Anyone ever tried microwaving wax to soften it? (But geez, don't put a cylinder in there!)

Hellgate
July 14, 2009, 11:29 PM
The melted candle wax is almost bearable when dripped on bare skin so it is no where near its flash point. When I looked at the pictures it didn't look like there was any wax on the caps themselves but maybe so. Seems I've heard of dripping wax or packing soft warm wax around capped nipples to waterproof revolvers for river crossings. I think it would be a bear to clean up however. I doubt that all of it would get blown aside when the gun is fired.

A soft wax bullet lube like SPG or a wax compound like chapstick (or another lip balm), saddle soap or snow seal may suffice to fill in any gaps around the edge of the lip of the cap once it's installed on the nipple without needing to use any flame to melt the product first.
Simply rub an ample amount of the product down against the raised edge of the lip of the cap to seal it from water droplets or dew like moisture seeping in.
It's possible that using a lesser amount of a foreign substance to seal the cap would be advantageous since it's not entirely unforseeable that excess candle wax could become dislodged upon firing and jam up the works for a subsequent shot.
There's a balance that needs to be struck between the reliablilty afforded by being protected from moisture and the ability of the revolver to function as intended.
I'm not saying that any excess wax becoming dislodged is probable, only that it may be possible just like with any cap fragment or other foreign object falling into the action and creating a blockage or physical interference of some sort.

@articap - That's an interesting point. I'm leaning towards several solutions at present.

1) Rubber Cement - Seems like it'd be easy to apply and should rub off pretty easy. Not sure how durable it'd be.

2) Nail Polish or Primer Sealer - These should work, worried about it cushioning the hammer blow though. Cleanup seems like it's require acetone.

3) Small strip of cellophane tape - possibly sealing the edges with one of the above.

4) Wax - But not sure about the melting part and safety yet. Also might melt off in hot weather.

5) Plastic tubing - possibly augmented with one of the sealers above.

No idea which is the best solution though. Guess there's enough nipples on one cylinder to do a comparison test though, LOL!

On first blush, I tend to prefer the nail polish the best, but not sure that if it dries rock hard, the cap won't go off.

Maybe try some controlled tests with your caps to see if they'll cook off under the heat of melted wax (some waxes like soy also have low melting points, which might be beneficial). You can melt soy in the microwave in a very short period of time, and you can find it at a dozen candle supply shop websites. It's a bit oily, though.

flmason:

Sorry haven't looked in this thread in a bit.

Yes, I use candle wax or on occasion beeswax to seal the cap end of the loaded cylinders because sometimes I may take out my C&B revolver to check traps or do chores on the club property & short of going swimming with it on I know that every time I drop that hammer the load it fires is dry & will go BOOM.
I just simply drip the wax above the caps onto them till I get what I'm looking for & then wipe off the excess with a cloth, been doing this since the late 80's & I've never had one go off on me.

Now the mod to the cylinder pin.
That was done because it has the 5.5" barrel but the pin is just too long to get past the barrel lug when I do completely disassemble it.
A lot of guys that have NMA's but cut their barrels shorter than even mine do this mod so they can simply remove the cylinder.
Basically I bought a spare pin, measured the ammount that I needed to just clear the barrel lug.
Then I cut the pin @ a 45* angle.
Cut a slot in both pieces of the pin for a hinge to be installed between.
Drilled the parts including a piece of shim stock that will serve as the hinge.
Then I used 2 roll pins to assemble the pieces together.
Cleaned up any rough edges & what not & reblued the whole pin.
Oh BTW all the work was done with my Dremel tool with 2 different cut off disks & drilling bits.
