John Wayne vs Clint Eastwood

July 8, 2009, 02:27 AM
So, my old lady got on me about one or the other being the better man. I argued and we decided the community would be a better judge than either of us.

Who would win in any sort of battle. Good old Wayne, or uppity Eastwood?

eastwood- wayne is a poser IMHO :)

I'm guessing that the mods are going to close this as an off topic thread.

July 8, 2009, 02:35 AM
most certainly they will

I voted for John Wayne as the better man.

I like Clint Eastwood's westerns a little better though. Darker, and a more complex, (human), character (usually)... IMO

Can't vote i'm afraid. Except for being good guys, they are very different. They each have pretty awesome styles, the movies wouldn't be the same without them.

Kind of Blued

Who would win in any sort of battle.

I guess it would depend on who was directing or writing the screenplay. They're actors.

July 8, 2009, 02:55 AM
Sorry to incite agitation. Was intended to be fun and light hearted.

I have always been a fan of both actors, but have always leaned towards the great JW after watching hundreds of his movies. My collection of both actors nearly encompasses their collective works. Although I have some gaps, the bookshelves I have devoted to them both is fairly heavy. If this thread is out of line with the views of THR than by all means lock/delete it.

i think it is a nice post- but so far a 4 to 4 you are not any closer to an answer :)

July 8, 2009, 02:59 AM
Hmm, Well Wayne's movies are more heroic. Whereas Eastwood's are more antihero.

I like grittier western's but I also like Wayne's "classic" model.

My dad prefers Wayne, because when he was going to USC, John Wayne's limo pulled up and offered hiim and his buddies a ride after a football game so he gets points. I'm afraid I can't vote on this one. Due to fear that whoever I don't vote for will appear in my house and beat me up :D

July 8, 2009, 03:03 AM
I like them both. I wouldn't want to break the 4 on 4 tie.

July 8, 2009, 03:09 AM
It would be a draw. John Wayne would holler and start bossing old Clint Eastwood around, like he does to everyone in all his movies, because he is the boss. Eastwood would scowl and make some smart alecky comment all gritty like. Then The Duke would holler some more and threaten to dispatch old Eastwood in an old codgery manner. After Eastwood's "make my day" sort of answer a tussel would insue, each man giving as well as he got. Then there would be a grand gunfight and both men would get shot to pieces, but limp away and be ok in the end. Both of their horses would probably get shot from underneath them too.

Pushed to 6/6 now...

Apples and Oranges

July 8, 2009, 03:23 AM
Argh!! If Wayne doesn't win I'm not allowed to buy my 30-30....

July 8, 2009, 03:24 AM
John Wayne, then, absolutely. Vote or die sitin' there you pilgrims!

July 8, 2009, 03:48 AM
i change to wayne- every red blooded american needs a 30-30

July 8, 2009, 03:58 AM
Nothing against Wayne but Eastwood all the way. Eastwood's the better shot anyways. Just look at the last one in "The Good the Bad and the Ugly"

July 8, 2009, 04:04 AM
Lee Van Cleef could take 'em both...then Jack Palance could take him...
July 8, 2009, 04:54 AM
After watching "Grand Torino", I had to say Clint.

July 8, 2009, 06:09 AM
How would I know?

That I know of, neither ever raped, robbed or murdered anybody.

They're both actors. Actors are sometimes entertaining. In the greater scheme of things they're not important.

Neither was or is a Carlos Hathcock, a Dick Bong or an Alexander Graham Bell.

Eastwood... much more quote-able these days. Nobody quote Wayne anymore unless its a Full Metal Jacket scene.

July 8, 2009, 06:50 AM

even though I love the spaghetti westerns. :)

Good grief!

Any of you guys ever hear of Gary Cooper? The real deal, worked as a cowboy in Montana, where he grew up (his daddy was a judge). Went to Hollywood and got discovered.

The Hanging Tree
High Noon (a wretched film, regardless what the "critics" claim)
Northwest Mounted Police
Garden of Evil
Vera Cruz
The Westerner
Man of the West
The Virginian
Springfield Rifle

He was pretty good.

Must be a lot of seniors on the high road to remember John Wayne. He died June 11, 1979.

Gary Cooper was the best of all, but died May 13, 1961 at age 60

July 8, 2009, 08:12 AM
Jimmy Stewart has them both covered by a mile.

July 8, 2009, 08:14 AM
I've never actually met Clint Eastwood. He gets points for his libertarian approach to things.

cyclopsshooter, ever meet the man?

Marion "John" Wayne wasn't a cowboy, but he wasn't a poseur, either. He got real points for driving carpool to my elementary school in an old blue station wagon, when a lot of the other parents shoved too many kids into sports cars just to show off.

July 8, 2009, 08:15 AM
who else but John Wayne

July 8, 2009, 08:17 AM
Clint, hands down an angrier man more determined man....
