Can we have an open forum or loosen the grip on the banhammer?

I've noticed we have no open forum area. While i realize this forum is devoted to GUNS and shooting I think the banhammer has been a little heavy lately on closing threads. There have been 2 threads I looked at today related to gun related issues that got closed because they were not "gun specific." One of those threads was one i created to poll the political opinions of THR members (real shooters, not mall ninjas) on a gun related issue.
If we can't make an open forum can we get one for GUN RELATED issues that aren't specific to dealing directly with RKBA or firearms discussions but involve firearms?

They have a sub-forum for that on here. I can't find it though lol so I just keep my thoughts to myself.

Do you mean this one? What's the general opinion of THR members on video games involving shooting?
I'm asking not about how accurate the games are but from the political stance. Do you guys think there should be limitations on access to the games? Should developers be limited in what they can/can't produce?Asking for opinions on the politics of video game ratings/restrictions isn't gun related, even if one of the reasons for having the ratings is because of gun-related violence in the game. The core issue is violence in video games, not guns. The question is political, not gun-related, by the OP's own admission. All the way around, there is no place on THR for this kind of stuff.
I do not grasp why some folk seem to find the need to dilute a gun-specific forum to be a one-stop-forum-for-all-things-that-interest-them.
To those who would suggest such things, I can only offer the following - it hasn't happened prior to your arrival, and your arrival isn't likely to act as the big catalyst to make that change.
Sorry if I sound cranky - I'm not trying to be. I'm just trying to spell out reality as plainly as I can.

In the early days of this website we did indeed have an open forum. It quickly degenerated into flame wars and people posting with the latest obscenities their parents had taught them.
So, no, no more open forum.

So, no, no more open forum. Thank goodness, it is tough enough to behave sometimes as is. :)

Um, you do realize there's a big difference between closing an off topic thread and a ban, right?

Maybe you value a group of peoples opinion, and would like to know how they feel on a certain subject.

Precisely.
I can totally agree with THR not wanting a free-for-all forum on here, and I don't think they should implement one.
That said, it would be nice to have a place where the group of folks on here could readily gather for such discussions. There are zillions of forums in existence. We could sort of agree on one or someone could create a new one. I wouldn't mind running such a forum myself, as it's not that difficult to setup and maintain a forum these days, but people on here would have to know about it somehow, and then they'd have to create another account, and I'm sure THR wouldn't want anything negative that happened on there to be associated with them.
So... probably not gonna happen.

There is such a place. It's called Armed Polite Society, and there's a link to it at the top left hand of this forum.

Actually, there isn't a link up there any longer. We had to remove it for the vbulletin upgrade. It is still in the FAQ thread in this forum though.

Personally, I prefer free speech in all forms, if it is too hard to manage the free speech, banning or limiting it is NOT the answer, that is the easy way out. I realize this is NOT a democratic ran forum and that some truly have the itch on their trigger finger in the power they have to ban, close or limit the words written. I have always been a believer that "Power corrupts, Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely." in all it's simple and complex forms and formats.
Would it not be better to allow the free speech and then moderate it's location, rather than moderate by banning, closing or limiting speech.
The making of private and secret societies to limit free speech truly is not the answer, that is the easy road out of a very complicated map......1778 Payne.

Anyone who thinks this is a free speech issue needs do some reading up on the topic so they quit posting this nonsense. Quoting Payne because one is not able to talk about cars or movie babes on a gun forum? Utterly ridiculous and frankly shameful.

Okay, by the numbers:
1. if it is too hard to manage the free speech, banning or limiting it is NOT the answer, that is the easy way out. Great. Go start your own forum.
2. There is only an apostrophe in its when you mean "it is", not when used possessively.
3. Since this is a privately (as opposed to publicly) owned forum, the concept of free speech does not apply here.
4. Questions should end with question marks.
5. A quotation regarding secret societies created to limit free speech in this context is not only not applicable, it's ( <---- note correct usage) bizarre.

I understand some more people may want to whine about this, but the answer's not going to change, so there's really no point in leaving this open. Anyone who feels the need to complain to someone, anyone, it's easy enough to PM.
