Seeing as how before long my gold inlayed Walker will have its fine gunleather courtesy of BigBadGuns I figured I needed to get that crappy red finish off the grips that Uberti uses. Just put on my 13th and final coat of tung oil and I have to say WOW!!!! Why does uberti cover up such a nice piece of wood with that slop. this is a very nice looking marbled pie grip. I was not expecting it to be "that" nice. May forego custom grips for this Walker and oput that money towards some elephant ivory for my Colt ;) Has anyone else discovered some nice timber underneath all that slop?

Yes, yes yes yes , I too am kinda puzzled over this .
It has to do with production costs am sure. Here , slop this on and send it out , collect money , good bye .
If they finished there grips better , cost would be higher and they feel the market share would dwindle, and they are probably right .

Bad part tis they don't finish the backside of the grips well or at all in most cases and that nasty oil they pack stuff with soakes in and in MANY of mine I would have just refinished , ruined them completely . That tis why I started to make grips NobleSniper , UBERTI . Hee hee hee :D
They fit them to the frames so well too , tis a real drag they ruin them with that nasty finish .

And where are your PICS ! Oh Noble ?

LOL They don't always fit 'em well... my Walker is back to the folks at Benelli right now so they can address this. Not only did the grips not fit well... they chipped the corner and "fixed" it with epoxy/sawdust and called it good. Well... I called 'em on it and they're "fixing" it right now. Got two of my babies at the "horsepistol" (so to speak) right now... feelin' kinda nekkid without 'em.

Hmmm... might have to pull 'em off when they get back and see 'bout strippin' 'em to seein' what the grain looks like.

I will get some pics once they dry. Will let them bake in the garage for a couple more days as I put the last coat on just now. Some real nice wood for sure.

If the wood is coated it often is because the majority are rather plain. But I'd rather have honest plain wood shown off as best it's able than some ersatz colouring hiding Mother Nature's handiwork.

For example I've got some plain ol' hemlock draw wood. But it's quarter sawn with an amaging 28 to 32 rings per inch. It's AMAZING wood. I've done a couple of shop knife handles with it and I don't doubt it would be a sharp looking pistol grip if the gun would do well with a white wood for grips. So even ordinary wood can have its moment in the spotlight if it's a superlative piece of "ordinary" wood.

New to THR, but I guess you could say I'm getting into the BP scene. I'm gonna start making some grips out of a block of purpleheart I have laying around -- hopefully it'll turn out well. I'm guessing that it doesn't matter too too much what particular kind of wood is used on the grips other than from an aesthetic standpoint?

unless your tradtionalist and purple heart is far from tradtional .
I use allot of Purple Heart , nice stuff, just ,make sure your grains are running the right direction for strength .
