.22 super colibri out of a 1911...

So, I recently bought a Kimber 1911 conversion from a real nice guy on here.

I've been dying to try it out, but haven't had a chance to run to the range yet.

I was ordering some ammo online, and came across these super colibri things.
I thought, "about as quiet as an airgun? SCHWING!"

Anyway, long story short, I fill up a gallon jug with water and mosey on over to the backyard.

When I let this thing off it was loud. It really surprised the crap out of me, since it was just as loud as a decent(m-60?) firework.

The bullet passed through and through the water jug and stopped in the dirt behind it.

I immediately went inside and unloaded the thing, hahahah.

It was definitely loud enough for the neighbors (about 100 yards away) to start callin' the cops.

It wasn't enough to ring my ears, but all of those guys saying "quiet as an air rifle" need to have their hearing checked.

This was much louder than any airgun I've ever heard.

How about you guys?
Any experiences with this super colibri stuff?

Well, to start with, CB rounds are quieter out of a rifle, much like just about everything.
Shooting without hearing protection is never a good idea, unless you have a suppressor mounted.
You seem to have demonstrated the truth behind the old saw of "nobody investigates one gunshot".

I shoot CCI CB-Shorts out of my 4inch revolver and they have a nice little crack....a bit too loud for my backyard....but when i load them in my Marlin 60, they are VERY quiet.

I wonder if these super colibri would cycle the action on an AR15 .22 conversion?!?!? MAN! then I could really get some use out of my AR here in the city (deep in the woods that is).

Remington CB 22LR rounds cycled a Colt Tactical Rimfire (don't look at me, I didn't name the thing) a friend brought to the range. They won't cycle my Ruger mkIII or Walther P22, generally I run them through my Henry for quieter range time.

I believe the problem is that you are expecting a Super Colibri to be as quiet as a Colibri cartridge. They are two different animals....and way different than "powdered" CB's.

Super Colibri - 20-grain bullet, primer only powderless with about 11 fpe
Colibri - 20-grain bullet, primer only powderless with about 5 fpe
CB Long or Short - 29-grain bullet, light powder charge with about 33 fpe

A Colibri fired from your conversion barrel should be very quiet. Out of 5"-6" barrels in a variety of my own .22 handguns, I hear the hammer fall or the striker hit, with a low "phooot" sound of the cartridge firing.
A Super Colibri on the other hand is much louder out of a handgun. These are almost totally silent out of 18" to 23" barrels though. Neither Colibri nor Super Colibri will cycle a semi-auto....they only use a priming charge.

NOTE: I shoot both Colibri and Super Colibri daily in a large variety of handguns and rifles. Always have several bricks of each (as well as CB's) onhand.

hmm... It must be subjective. I am shooting the CCI CB Shorts out of a 6" revolver in the yard, and they just make a little "snap".

Perhaps the lack of house or fence on either side allows the sound to dissapate instead of reflect back to the ears...

Perhaps it's the "flash control cylinder" ( a 1/8" lip on the cylinder's front) that deflects the sound.

Probably a combination of factors, including cumulative hearing damage. :)

I love CB Shorts for target practice, I have no problem at all shooting them in the woods with no ear protection.... They are about as loud as a loud air rifle

but for my backyard they have too much 'snap'....my neighbors houses are about 12-15 feet away to my left and right, and about 60-70 feet behind....

Hmm, I guess I'll have to get some regular Colibri and try those out.

A substantial amount of the "report" when a cartridge is fired comes from the primer. Even a blank .22 cartridge is quite loud. If you've ever used a powder-actuated nail gun that uses .22 Short blanks for power, you've heard what one sounds like.
