I am heading down to North Carolina on vacation from NJ. I am bringing a 12 gauge shotgun with me to go target practice at a nice gun range down there. Is it legal/store policy for me to buy Wal Mart target loads at an NC wal-mart with an out of state driver's license?

Not sure how to word this.

Have the "perceptions" of lawful activities gotten so skewed that we now can't expect to buy bullets in other states (Illinois and similar notwithstanding)?

You do not need ID to buy shotgun shells in NC.

It is not NJ or IL.

Really, you guys should leave your states more often. :D

Who's ever been ID'd for shotgun ammo? Heck, I rarely get ID'd for pistol ammo anymore and I'm only 25... maybe I just look older?

Well, state laws make it pretty confusing so it's not all paranoia.

Check out this gem from Texas Penal Code 46.07:

Sec. 46.07. INTERSTATE PURCHASE. A resident of this state may, if not otherwise precluded by law, purchase firearms, ammunition, reloading components, or firearm accessories in contiguous states. This authorization is enacted in conformance with Section 922(b)(3)(A), Public Law 90-618, 90th Congress.

At first read you might think it saying that you can only buy ammo only in states contiguous to Texas.

That's not what it means but if you are not used to the backwards wording of some laws it sure might look that way.

Buying ammo in Illinois FOID or no FOID is no problem. Visit Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, or Missouri. They will be happy to take your business.

Welcome to The High Road.

Your diligence in researching local law before visiting another state is to be commended. There are too many stories in the news about people visiting MA, NJ and NY without so doing and winding up in jail and losing their firearms.

To my knowledge, there are no restrictions on adults purchasing legally available ammunition in NC. Nor is it Walmart policy to check ID for shotgun ammunition. It is policy to check ID for handgun ammunition, but they are checking for age, not residency.

You should be just fine. Have a good vacation.

You just have to find a store with what you want on the shelves. It has been spotty lately here in Central NC. Good think is there is ususally another Walmart within 15 min of the last one ;)

The social demonizing of our interests have done much to 'mentally convict' law abiding gun owners into questioning these movements; not to mention speaking freely about them.
