What causes this ring on the case?

So I've noticed alot of reloads (my own and some others i've discovered at the range), have this ring at the neck of the case. What causes this?
I know I trim mine with a lee setup, in a drill. It trims them down to a length of around 1.735" or so. Then chamber, and debur.
The picture doesnt show it very well, but its a very distinguished ring around the entire neck (about .75mm down from the very tip of the neck)

I'm gonna guess a .223?
"Trim Too" length is 1.750" so there is no chance you are getting the case into the rifling leade unless you have pushed the shoulder back way too far somehow.
The other possibility is that is the remains of a bullet crimp.
Is your seating die set so low it is also crimping by any chance?
That's sure what it looks like.
In fact, it looks like you used a Lee FCD on it.

.223 is correct. I run all my stuff through a dillon case gauge, so I dont think that the full length sizer is too low.
Hmm, crimp could be. Maybe it gets exaggerated or something during firing. I bearly crimp mine with a factory crimp die, but your probably right.

What dies are you using? I have seen this happen a time or two and it was always because the expander button on the decapping rod was too small. How would you say the neck tension on your bullets when seating is? Are they extremely tight or very loose. If the expander button is too small they will be very tight. I don't know why it caused this, or maybe it didn't, but that is what I have experienced.

It's the Lee FCD I tell you.

I gotta be honest, I haven't been reloading all that long, so I cant exactly determine neck tension but I will say this:
I've pulled down a couple factory bullets, and then a couple of mine own (mainly out of curiosity and I wanted to see the components), using a kinetic puller, and they both took about the same amount of effort to come apart.
I wouldn't say mine are extremely tight, but they dont just drop into place either.
I think you may be onto something though, now that I think about it. I did have a defective (or I made it defective), decapping rod, and just got a replacement. I never even thought of that!:banghead:
You guys sure are smart! Thanks gentlemen, I bet its probably one of those two things.

Looks pretty much like my lee FCD rounds to me. With a heavy crimp.

I am going to go against the grain here and say that it is probably the Lee Factory Crimp Die. I didn't see that suggested yet.

Close up (best I could do) of a 7.62 X 39 crimp with the Lee FCD. My first 7.62 X 39 reloads. Haven't shot them yet!

ACORN says 9,953 votes for Obama and one for the Lee FCD, which they threw out because it wasn't for Obama.

Walkalong...Where you been? Just now weighing in? Well, with so many right answers, I wasn't going to, but decided to try to get a good pic. :)
