I've packed away my S&W "Bible" ( we are in the middle of a move ) so I don't have it handy to reference a manufacturing date. I wonder if some kind soul would let me know the manufacture date of a S&W M49 Bodyguard serial # 7259xx

A 49 should have a J prefix. According to the SCSW, J7259xx puts it at 1979-1980

The "J" prefix didn't start 'til 1969. The OP's serial number corresponds to a pre-'69 range made in 1955 (55050-75000).

edited to add: The Model 49 series appears to have been introduced in 1959, the non-J-prefix serial number range 163051-786544 of this gun were produced under the Chiefs Special series. I *think* my dating is correct but I'm not 100% positive.

Thanks fellas. There is definitely no J in the serial number. I was a bit surprised not to find one. I appreciate the help with this one.
