are there 2 different 45 caliber gas checks, one for pistols (.452") and one for rifle (.459")? or is it the same check, and it will crimp on either depending on the sizer die?

I would imagine that this depends on the specific caliber you're talking about. .45ACP? .45 Colt? .45-70 Government? Something else?

Bullets designed for a gas check have a shank or heel at the base, designed to take the gas check. The critical dimension is therefore not the bullet, but the shank. In general, all gas check designs for .45s, both rifle and pistol, have the same shank diameter.

He said .452" pistol and .457" rifle.
Doesn't matter what caliber in .45 anyway.
Because that's the only size .45 gas-check Hornady or Lyman make.

Yep -- and the shanks for .45 gas check designs are all the same, for .45 ACP, .45 Colt, and .45 rifle.
