So I'm helping out my bro pick out his first gun. He shot a Beretta 92fs one time and really liked it so I suggested a Taurus PT92 off of buds, cause they have them for $410 shipped.

Do you guys think there are any disadvantages of getting the Taurus over the Beretta besides the brand name?

He's a lefty so the ambi-safety would be good, but do you guys have any other thoughts?? Also, do they take the Mec-Gar 92fs mags?

Thanks

Do a search here - there have been a lot of comparisons between the two.

I am a Taurus PT92 fan, specifically because of its superior safety design relative to the Beretta.

Agreed. And for some reason I shoot more accurately with the PT92 over the M9.

I have a Taurus 92 and a Beretta 92. The Beretta is a better pistol with better trigger, fit and finish. The Taurus 92 is a good pistol too and have withstood many thousand rounds. They are both equally extremely reliable but the Beretta's a bit more accurate, likely due to the better trigger. The safety makes no difference to me since I carry this type of pistol with hammer down ready for first shot in DA mode. BTW both have ambi safeties.

The main advantage of the Taurus is you save about $150. One of the advantages of the Beretta is that magazines are readily available for reasonable cost.

I find the safety on the Taurus much easier to apply and push-off. This could be important if you are involved in any type of physical altercation, yet to escalate into a gun grab.

I shoot the M9 Beretta, as well as my old PT92, and find little difference in accuracy with a new M9 over a well-used PT92. Triggers are also comparable. The Berettas, except for the real M9, are moving to polymer parts, and MIM. The Taurus isn't.

Same here. I think it would be a fine first gun for your brother, it has been for me.
