Where can I find the specs for a Mossberg Maverick?
I presume it is closely related to the 500.. but I really don't know.
I want a shotgun with an 18" barrel, screw-in chokes, and the ability to handle 3" shells. Also, I want it to be reasonably priced. Nothing over $500, and I imagine I can find something around 300 or less.
The barrel length is a firm requirement.
I would favor a Mossberg or Remington because parts are easy enough to get ahold of. Plenty of aftermarket too.

Have you looked at the Mossberg website?

18" factory barrels with removable choke tubes are a bit of a rarity. I don't know of anyone producing one. I believe that Remington makes a 20" rifle sighted barrel with choke tubes. Not a clue about Mossberg.
You might take a look at a turkey gun. Most of them have short (20"-22") vent rib barrels with choke tubes. I know you said 18" is a firm requirement, but I notice very little difference between 18" & 20" barrels. Aside from the turkey guns, You might have to pick up a short barrel defense gun and have it cut for choke tubes.
Wish I could be more help.
Here's a link to the Maverick website. There was a link on the Mossberg page.

For hogs, I prefer a .308 Winchester.

I have a .30-06 bolt-action. I don't know where I would get open sights on it. It's a Mossberg ATR-100. It's doesn't handle very quickly.

A 2x or 1.5x scope is a LOT faster than iron sights. No sights to align, just put the crosshairs on him and squeeze. If you don't like that, an aimpoint is fast, too. I just have an aversion to electronics in firearms.
I have a 2x10x40 Weaver on my .308, fantastic, good in low light which is when your hog will come out and those irons will be useless. The gun is a little 6 lb Remington M7, very quick to the shoulder and on target. That little rifle has put down more'n a few hogs.
Forced to use buckshot on a WMA this year, I carried my H&R 10 gauge turkey gun, 24" barrel, modified choke. It groups well. I only got to hunt a couple of days on that WMA this year due to work, though, bummer. WMA was open there 2 months. I'd far rather use a rifle, but I understand why the rule being public hunting and all.

A single shot would be cool.
I think a side by side would be freaking sweet. But I would still want to be able to change my chokes out.

Check out the Remington Spartan (aka Baikal) 12 gauge coach guns. I have a 20 with interchangeable chokes. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/SPR_models/SPR220_side-by-side.asp
The Spartan is a rugged side by side coach gun and the choke tubes make it awesome as a hunting gun. I use my 20 on doves and it'll shoot over 40 yards with the full choke in, though I normally hunt with IC/mod installed. It'll take 3" loads, too, and I got my 20 gauge for $299 plus tax from a gun shop in Victoria, Texas. Might be what you're lookin' for. :D It's a very compact little gun with 20" barrels and no action to add length like a repeater has.
My 10 gauge H&R is a HEAVY gun, 9 lbs, but when you pull the trigger you will appreciate the heft. Hey, it kicks! It also patterns VERY well. I really bought it for goose hunting, was only $200 from a friend with an FFL who ordered it for me. They MSRP for 265 or somewhere around there. Only thing about the H&R is, only choke tubes H&R sells for it is a modified (full for steel shot) for the waterfowler model and a XFull for the turkey gun. Since it was my intent to use it on geese, I bought the mod choke and it does pattern well with 3.5" 10 gauge buck. Again, no receiver length to speak of, so the 24" barrel gun is as short as any 18" pump, or close, anyway. Don't have a short barrel pump to compare it to.

I have a 3-9x scope on my Mossy.

As DaleCooper51 suggested you might want to check out some turkey guns. Here's mossberg's grand slam turkey series shotguns, the 500 and 835 come with 20in barrels and screw in turkey chokes.

I picked up the maverick 88 field model a few weeks ago, and Mossberg had no problem with exchanging the 28" vent rib barrel for the 20" vent rib barrel. They were also willing to trade for the 18.5", but that's only worth 1/2 the vr barrels.
Is there a reason that you are so set on the 18.5 barrel? If it's a storage space issue, it may be worth it to get the longer choked barrel and a bantam or folding stock.

I really want a short gun.
I don't have any that handle very quickly.
