I'm in the market for an inexpensive boresighter, and I found a couple at Brownells. One is the tradtional spud thing from Simmons, ~$60, and the other is a Leupold magnetic, ~$50.

Any preferences, or other in this price range that's better? (Lasers are too expensive for me.)

I can strongly recommend the Leupold Scopesmith Magnetic Boresighter. I bought one a couple of years ago and it makes it amazingly easy to boresight your rifles. An added bonus is that you don't have to worry about damaging your barrel as can happen with the traditional type of boresighter.

I bought mine from Midway USA and it was around $40 at the time. It's a bargain at that price. It will pay for itself, if you have a few guns to sight-in. A boresighter is especially great to have if you have guns that are not bolt actions.

Bigiron,

Thanks, and coincidentally, I just ordered a Leupold Magnetic Boresighter from Midway this afternoon, for $42 and change. When sighting in a 300 Win Mag, I wanted to minimize pains in my wallet ($1.50 per premium round) and pains in my shoulder.

There seemed to be some concerns in the feedback about the quality of the lenses they use(d), but the return rate was around 0.3%, so that's quite a vote in favor.

This is just a quick follow-up on the Leupold Magnetic Boresighter, and I'm with BigIron on this - this is really a cool tool to own. It's cheaper than the spud-based kind, and works well for getting bullets onto paper. This is important for me when firing expensive, hard-kicking ammo.

Now all I have to do is understand what seems to be magic: how does the collimator do its job? It doesn't seem to care whether you change the elevation of the boresighter or not - as long as you can see the grid, the elevation figure through the scope doesn't change. It's magic, I tell you.
