Hi

I have purchased a NcSTAR 30 MM Red Dot sight with reciever mount, from CDNN for my Yugo SKS

Of course, the thing does not fit. (ie. it slides in fine, but the retaining pin will only go 2/3rds of the way in, if I use a fair amount of hand force.

I have heard illusions made that one has to file the thing down.

Being a neophyte at this type of work, I hoped that some of the pro's could enlighten me?

What method of filing, and tool works best?

How does one keep each side of the rail even?

I have also read that it should be tight enough that a person should smack the pin home with a mallet  Is this true?

Thanks for any and all other comments.

This may be harder to explain than it is to do. First NO Mallets or hammers on the pin.
Use a Marksalot to blacken the top of the two prongs that fit in under the bolt cover, take out the recoil spring to make the next part easier. push the receiver cover into place, the cover may stick out the back of the receiver a very small amount, use a wood block or a plastic hammer an give the rear of the cover a whack. Take the cover out and the Marksalot should be marked where the prongs are hitting. If your pin is going in part way, you will need to remove only a very small amount. Use a small coarse sharpening stone, make 4 or 5 passes on each prong, try to keep the stone parrallel to the angle of the prongs.
Try the cover again, now repeat until it fits, you do want the pin to require effort to get in, alittle twisting from side to side is o.k., but NO hammers.
Hope this helps

Good tip. Take your time and do it just like that and you should end up with a setup that will shoot and hold a decent zero. The replacement covers aren't the best for group size and repeatability, but if you do the fitting carefully they will give you good service. If you can get 3" groups and the same POA after cleaning the rifle, you did a good job of fitting.
