I am searching around for a scope for my Remington 700 SPS in a .308. I like the Bushnell Elite 6500 6.5-30X50. I can even get a good price on it <550. Anyone have experience good or bad? I know some of the complaints are about limited elevation travel, only 50 MOA. I see on some sites it's 50 MOA, on others it's 80 MOA. Anyone know why there's a difference? 50 is definitely too small, but 80 is reasonable.

Oh, and the gun will be used for target shooting at long range.

Thanks for your input.

All the specs are on Bushnell's website...

That scope (its 4.5-30x50) is 50 moa internal adjustment. The 2.5-16x42 have 80 moa internal adjustment. I think the 6500's are great and have an awesome zoom range. I do think by having that wide zoom though you do lose a little edge to edge clarity. You can't have your cake and eat it too, there are trade-offs.

50 moa is plenty for a hunting rifle scope if you plan on using it for extreme long range target shooting you will need a canted base.

i have one of the 2.5-16 tacticals and i think its great (on a 700p). you get all the way out to 16x and it may lose SOME clarity, but again, i think its more than a fair trade for the added range.

just like the above post said, you wont get the 80moa adjustment with the 30x, but if you are set on it, a 20moa base would likely ease your pains. for under $550, you'd probably be doing good. how far out is long range for you?

heres a pic of mine ;)

It's a 4.5 on the bottom end, not 6.5. But there is a definite knock on these - several have said at high end magnification (past 18-20 or so), it's pretty cheesy / not clear, and bordering on useless. This was corroborated by several people. That and the number of MOA adjustments. The 2.5-16 models get good reviews.

Long range for me is 600 meters, the longest range in my area.

I started looking at the 2.5-16 X 50, but it's actually more than the 4.5-30 (thanks for the correction Doc) on the site I'm looking at. Now I'm all confused! I guess with a 20 MOA base and 50 MOA of adjustment 600m will be no problem? What do you think the MIN and MAX would be with the 20 MOA base? 100m-800m ish? If I can get the 4.5-30 for $550 is that the deal to be had?

Thanks
