AR-10 & AR-15 Parts ?'s

July 16, 2009, 10:10 PM
Hello everybody, I was recently at a gun show and there was a juicy offer for an DPMS LR-.308 AR-10 assault rifle. I would love to own one, but I would also like to customize it to my liking (rail, grip, sight, stock, etc). My only thing is, where I'm at, AR-10 parts aren't as abundant as the normal AR-15 parts. My question is: Are customization parts interchangeble between the AR-10 and AR-15? I asked around and some folks said different things than others. I need some help, if AR-10 aren't as common does anybody know if they are around at all? Can you order them from a site? Help!

there are some online places that will have about anything you can imagine. and yes in a particular order.

as far as interchangeability that is a tough one and someone more educated on the subject will hopefully chime in.

btw welcome to thr.

some parts are, some aren't. you'll have to be more specific.

they have a list at not for sure what all it includes or of the link. I know it include the parts in a lower parts kit that will interchange. Armalite also has several accessories for the ar-10 at Most of the parts will not interchange between armalite and dpms.

I have a DPMS LR-308 24" SS Bull Fluted. Except for optics, a bipod, and a replacement grip they are great out of the box. To answer your question though:
(rail, grip, sight, stock, etc)
Rail - They take a specific one. No reason to replace to replace though unless you want to mall ninja it up, there is a front attachment you can use for the bipod on the free float handguard that comes with them, there is a rail on front sight base if you want to add a backup irons, etc.
Grip - They take standard AR-15 grips, I installed a DPMS grip with a palm shelf. Standard grip looks odd on it, I would replace with something, a palm shelf grip or a oversized grip at least
Sights - you can use ar-15 sights, mounts and optics would be similar
Stocks - you can use aftermarket but you have to reuse the springs and buffer that is specific. Usually you would just pull the stock body off an put the aftermarket stock on the tube that came on the rifle, most aftermarket stocks are offered in just the body. The A2 stock is good to go.

I object to the OP's use of "assault rifle." ;)

That rifle is not an assault rifle, to be an assault rifle it would have to be select fire (semi and burst/or full auto). That it a semiautomatic target rifle in .308.

First thing to note is that, unlike the AR15, the 'AR10' is actually not a single set of specs, so every vendor's 308-chambered AR-pattern rifle will have unique parts that are specific to that manufacturer. I have owned both DPMS and Armalite 308-pattern ARs and many parts will not interchange between these two, much less between them and the AR15.

I would also like to customize it to my liking (rail, grip, sight, stock, etc)Flat-top (railed) receivers themselves are different between the platforms, but the rail dimensions are standardized so railed accessories will interchange.

Grips are different between the AR15 and LR308, and the DPMS LR308 will not even share the same grip as the Armalite AR10.

Sights are interchangeable.

Nonfloat forearm plastic is interchangeable between all the variants; float forearms are not. Buttstocks are interchangeable (so long as you're not looking to use a buttstock with a elevated cheeckpiece). If you use Magpul PRS or similar, you'll need to get an LR308 specific version that accomodates the longer charging handle throw.

Grips are NOT different, AR-15 and LR-308 share the same grips.
