A grocery store manager shot and killed a suspected burglar Sunday in
Alakanuk, a small village 15 miles inland from the coast of the Bering
Sea, Alaska State Troopers said.
Abraham Kilbuck, 18, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest,
troopers said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting, which took place sometime
before 6 a.m. at D F Jorgensen Co., one of three grocery stores in
Alakanuk, a community of about 650 people northwest of Bethel.

Troopers said Jorgensen manager Larry Koslosky, who lives about 40 yards
away from the store, noticed early Sunday morning that all the security
lights around his business were off.
He grabbed a handgun and went to see what was going on, troopers said.

Koslosky, 54, discovered that a padlock on the store's breaker box had
been broken off and that the electricity had been shut off, said trooper
spokesman Greg Wilkinson. Inside the store, Koslosky confronted Kilbuck
and shot him, troopers said.

Details about what happened during the confrontation, including whether
Kilbuck was armed, were not released. Troopers are investigating,
Wilkinson said.

Reached by telephone Tuesday at his store, Koslosky said troopers had
instructed him not to talk about the shooting.

"This is a very traumatic thing," he said. "I feel so sad about what
happened. I wish I could spill my guts. I'd feel better. But I can't."

Koslosky said he has lived in Alakanuk for about 2 ½ years and he was
acquainted with the young man he shot. Kilbuck had done some labor for
him about a month ago, he said.

Kilbuck's family, also reached by telephone in Alakanuk, said Tuesday
they weren't ready to talk about the shooting. Alakanuk Mayor Frank
Alstrom Jr. said community members planned to meet Tuesday night to
discuss the shooting.

"We're going to try to find out what the truth was," he said. "We
don't
really know what happened."

A trooper from Bethel and a crime scene technician from Anchorage flew
to Alakanuk on
Sunday morning and stayed until Monday evening, collecting evidence and
conducting interviews, Wilkinson said. Kilbuck's body is being flown to
Anchorage for an autopsy, he said.

The trooper had to fly in from Bethel.

Kind of rules out the whole "dial 911" thing doesn't it.

This one will get ugly.

Everyone in that village is related and have ties going back hundreds of generations. The grocer is an outsider and it's not going to matter much whether he was justified or not. He needs to seek employment elsewhere, and quickly!

Wow.
So he didn't just shoot a burgler...
He shot the town.

Scary
