I was watching a you-tube video last week (yeah, I know - stop that, Mike!) and some guy made a 12 gauge slug using a 3/4" hole in a board for the slug mould. He used a Lee Loader to put a primer in the shell, dumped in some powder, stuck in a wad, dropped in the slug, and crimped the shell. Simple, easy, and it worked just fine. So I started thinking (my wife says that's unusual in itself) that the same sort of thing should be easy to do for a 20 gauge slug. I'm thinking a 5/8" hole should do it for a mould. However, being a chicken at heart with a wide yellow striped running down my back, I figured I'd ask here first - has anyone done this?

Hey, pick up a real slug mold. I load 12 and 20 and use Lyman. They can use a standard crimp (most want a roll crimp). Devastating on deer, and I can maintain 2" groups at 50 yards.

If you don't want to cast your own, you can buy them hardcast from several places online (try Ballistic Products)

Agreed, that would be the best way to go. But sometimes the enjoyment of a thing isn't measured in accuracy or ease of use.

First of all, a 3/4 hole would make a .750" slug under ideal conditions, and then get bigger as the board chared and the hole burned out.

A 12 GA shotgun has a nominal bore diameter of .729".

SO once the solid lead slug got past the forcing cone, BAD things would start to happen with pressure, choke constriction, and probably a few other things.

DON"T EVEN CONSIDER IT!

Slugs are either hollow so they can easly deform to fit a tight choke, or the are undersize to start with.

In the case of a commercial forster type slug, they are both!

Get a slug mold!

Ok, well here's the link that got me interested. Like I said in post #1, if anyone has done anything like this for a 20 gauge, let me know. It's just a curiosity thing, not a way of life. As for idiots, commercial loads, commercial moulds, etc., we can save all for a different thread. Thanks!
