well,traded off my springfield garand for a brand spankin new sig p226.back problems have made carrying the garand back and forth to the range intolerable.traded even up.a friend has a p226 and a p229 and likes them both so i figured hey,why not.what kind of options are there(i.e. lights ect) for the p226?any special things i should know about the p226?thanks

The P226 is an outstanding pistol, with no special caveats attached to it. They are uniformly accurate, totally reliable, and very well made.

Because it's been around since the mid-1980s, it's easy to get reasonably priced pre-ban 15-round magazines for it. Every holster maker has leather for it in their inventory. The P226 is to 9mm pistols what the P220 is to .45s...a great design with an excellent reputation, which can hold its own against any other pistol in its class in every respect.

The P226 does not come with light rails, so you're limited to lights which bolt to the mag bottom or the trigger guard. Lasermax makes a guide rod laser for the P226, if that's your cup of tea.

I think you made a great choice. I have a P226 on my belt as I type this, so I am pretty biased, but there aren't too many people who have anything bad to say about the P-series SIGs in general, and the P226 in particular.

There is a company making an adapter that mounts to the triggerguard so that an M3 light can be mounted. Sure Fire makes a light that mounts on the front of the triggerguard. I haven't found the need for either device on my P226, I use a handheld Sure Fire P6 instead.

It's too late now, but SIG is just coming out with the P226ST. All steal w/ a built in rail. But, like chips, you can't just have one :D

SIG is coming out with both the aluminum framed and stainless steel framed 226's with the picatinny rail.

I think the rail detracts from the classic lines of the 226, but it may grow on me like the 220ST grew on me over time.

My 226 is the most accurate 9mm I own....groups tighter than the 228 or my long-standing 9mm fave, the CZ75.

If it's an older blued P226, you should watch the bluing for surface rust. If it's a newer Nitron or older K-kote, you probably won't have to worry about it.

Otherwise, the P226 is at the highest tier of auto pistol hierarchy. Extra magazines and a good holster or two are about the only things you really need for it. Well, ammo too.

I've always liked the 226. Never owned one, little too expensive for me. The spec ops wannabe in me reeaaalllly wanted one bad, along with a Kramer Vertical Scabbard after that pic of the Navy SEAL in Stan was posted all over the internet. For those of you who never saw that.

I have never owned a p226 , but i have shot them before and they are the most accurate pistol , i have ever shot . I was amazed at how accurate they were .

i have always wanted one too but they were always way out of my price range until i happened upon this one and the dealer wanted a original m1 rifle to go to camp perry shoots with.i amost passed it up as i needed money but figured it was now or never.im glad i did get it,may even let my wife handle it.

I am not sure it is that great of deal. Isn't a Springfield Garand worth more? If your Sig P226 is a 9mm isn't it a tad large for the caliber? Lastly, Sig P226 don't like lead bullets.

Now that I am done with the downside the Sig P226 is a boring pistol. Why? It shoots where you point it and it goes bang everytime. I have never had a malfi with my Sig P226 and I have owned it for a long, long time.

In the end you traded for a very good pistol.

i had around 650 in the garand.i probably could have asked for 700 and wouldnt have the sig today.the garand was getting too heavy to carry back to the place i shoot and caused me a great deal of lower back pain at the end of an afternoon.the trade between just looking at the m1 collecting dust and getting something ive always wanted and can shoot...hmmm.works for me.
