This brass conical mold was included with a Pietta 1860 Army presentation set made in 1993.
I'm curious about what other types of brass molds are supplied with other factory presentation sets.
Can anyone show us theirs?
Has anyone cast using a similar brass mold and how did it shoot?

This particular mold produces a heeled bullet designed for easier loading.

The one on the far left came with a Colt 3rd Generation Signature Series gun (the signature is on the back of the mould).
The middle one I bought online (Midway or Track of the Wolf)
The third is an original that I got at an antique shop. I'm not sure of the caliber (one of these days I'll measure it).
I cast some roundballs and conicals using the one in the middle. The roundballs were too small, probably .451.

Wow that gun is a beut. One word of advice HANDLES. even with casting gloves. you can not cast with those brass molds. You have to make up some handles. its fairly easy to do. heck take a piece of wood dowling and grind the outside ontil the mold handles fit in place then put a screw through the brass. or drill a hole in the wood to make them slide over the brass. either way you need to fabricate some wooden handles.

Handles. Good point. I used welders gloves (woodstove gloves) and it was pretty hot still. Handles. Hmm...
That gun is the Custer model. I bought it unfired and haven't had the heart to fire it yet. I shoot the originals that are worth more...

OK quick question about a conical bullet that would be cast by the mould in the tread. When loading it would the rammer deform the point enough to screw up it accuracy?

Depends on the gun. Most revolver loading levers have some what of a circular groove that may not distort the conical. Same time from threads before in the past. It can distort the conical however after several range test and chronograph test it was not even enough of a difference to be concerned about.

I use a couple pair of vice grips on mine, many of those molds don't make a true round ball.

On one of my small 36cal brass molds I slid a .410 paper shotshell hull over the handles AND wore gloves but they do get hot. The conicals were no where near as consistant nor as easy to load as the LEE conicals (get the double cavity mold w/handles included). I can't remember if the RB or CB were out of round but I came to the conclusion that the molds are for show only.
