Help me out here folks. When doing deals with other THR folks, is it considered customary to test fire a weapon during the 3 day check-out period?

No. Unless the seller gives you permission, normal protocol says that once you shoot the firearm, there are no returns and you own it.

Yeah, what EOD said.

I can't imagine evaluating a gun without firing it.

Ask the person you are dealing with. The worst they can say is no. Then you have the option of following through on their terms or taking your business somewhere else.

If the gun is new I agree that if you fire it, you own it. Any problems encountered are between you and the manufacturer. If it is used, I see no problem with verifying functionality and if the gun was misrepresented, you have every right to seek redress with the seller.

As stated before I don't see a problem with firing a used gun.

It seems to me that some honesty is required.

I would be miffed if someone tried to return the weapon because
"it didn't feel right"

The whole transfer/shipping thing is a lot of trouble to go through so people can "browse"

I would feel inclined to make good on a weapon that magically became a lemon during shipment...which seems unlikely

My understanding was that:

New gun - You shoot it, you bought it.

Used gun - Test fire OK, just don't overdo it.

Like Obiwan says, trust has a lot to do with it and I don't have any issue with people from THR test firing a weapon I have sent them, provided they're not a first time poster and I have some sense of them. I want them to make sure that they're happy with the purchase and that the weapon functions as advertised. My name is more important than a hundred rounds or so through a gun. If the gun is new however, different story!

Anyhoo, the concensus seems to say that it's OK provided it's been cleared with the seller. Good, safe position to follow and works for both parties. In a recent transaction, I assumed and test fired when I should have asked first. The seller was very magnanimous and insisted no harm, no foul, but for my own edification, I wanted to know what the expected standard is. The transaction is complete and the gun is everything the seller stated.

Next time Kirk, just ask.
