Seems a lot of folks use magnum primers for all their .308 loads, what's you're take on this with H-4895? I'm about to place an order and want to get what will work best. Some folks say they work better, others say you don't need'em, what's the scoop?:D

You don't need'em.

Probably give worse results in the small .308 case then standard primers with stick type powder like 4895.

Shot 1000s of 308 loads and never used a magnum primer. I know that some guys use magnum primers with ball powder but I don't shoot ball powder in 308.

A Handloader Journal article covering 308 Win load accuracy used CCI 250 primer (Large Rifle Magnum) as the most accurate load with Varget and 168gr SMK.

Primers are just one variable in the pursuit of accuracy.

Rules of thumb for magnum rifle primers: is when it is very cold, or when using a lot of ball powder (i.e. compressed) or over 60gr of extruded powder.

I have made 270, 7mm Mag, and 375H&H loads with LR primers.

I'm only running 42 grains of H-4895 behind a 168 SMK, so the standard large rifle should be fine.

No need for a Magnum primer with such a small charge of powder especially with a powder like H4895 which isn't temperature sensitive. I use both IMR and H4895 with the same exact bullet and have never used a Magnum primer for my 30-06 rounds. Loading the .308 is no different for the most part.
