Is a NIB Mod. 40 S&W worth $450?

A friend has one that belonged to his late father. In the original box w/all papers and has never been fired. Looks like the day it was made. I've been wanting an older wood gripped, hammerless .38 for some time, but the price seems a bit high. Any opinions on the value of this pistol would be appreciated.

If it is absolutely totally pristine unscratched cherry....worth it.
Worth a little more if no letter prefix in the serial number.

That grip safety can be painful. :what: BTDT !
Luckily it is easily deactivated.

I noticed a similar revolver (original box, etc.) with one small ding on the frame, but unfired coming up for auction. Estimated value was $350.00 to $500.00. (It had the letter "L" in the serial number.)

I've heard stories about the grip safety, but I've never had a revolver with one. I said "it looks like the day it was made", but the only mark on it is a very faint drag line on the cylinder. I looked at a S&W 642, but it would cost me just over $400 w/tax, so there's only about $50 difference. I plan to carry it and I'm not real sure which way to go(Model 40 or 642); I'm not buying it just as a collector gun, so over time, it will be taken care of but will get some holster wear.

I owned a NIB S&W model 40, with s/n L97XX. A few years
ago, a collector wanted it worst than I did. Anyway, I did
make a few pennies off that deal. It's a great firearm, but
for daily pocket carry the model 42 would be a better choice.
FootNote: The S&W model 42 is the Airweight version
of the same weapon.
