I looked at a Colt Official Police 38 this evening. It had a fair ammount of honest blue wear, and a few scratches, but everything seemed sound mechanically. The grips looked like what I would have expected to see on a Trooper, or Python, nice comfortable, well worn "target" type grips I guess you'd call 'em. (About like the target grips on a Smith and Wesson, anyway.) Nice hefty gun.

S/N is 806149. I didn't see any letters either before or after.

(If I remember correctly, I was issued one of these years ago when I worked part time as a security guard. They gave me the gun, six rounds of LRN ammo, a Sam Brown belt and a holster and told me not to shoot myself or anyone else "unless you have to.")

The gun was made in 1950, when Colts were very well made. If it is in good condition, it should be a reliable and accurate revolver. IIRC, +P .38 Special ammo should be OK in that gun. Do NOT fire any +P+ .38 Special loads in revolvers chambered ONLY for the .38 Special; that load should be fired only in revolvers made for the .357 Magnum.

Thanks Jim. The mfg date was what I really wondering about. I had looked it up, but the Colt models and numbers are sort of confusing so I wasn't sure I was reading it right.

No worries about "+" ammo. I seldom shoot anything more than a wadcutter load in my revolvers anyway.
