You guys are gonna love this... So I'm sitting on the couch with my female.... friend (long story) watching TV and while I'm cleaning my Garand (She doesn't find the smell of Shooters Choice and Sweets quite the aphrodisiac that I do...funny) anyway... She says "Why do you have 4 rifles? Isn't that excessive?" I said... "I'm an amateur with only 4 compared to some people I know of (thinking of people on this forum and battlerifles.com and some others.) Then she had to give it to me about buying a safe (which I thought was pretty responsible.) Anyway, I thought you guys would get a good laugh out of it.

If I don't say it, someone else will: Yes, four is excessive, send the Garand to me.

Actually, it sounds to me as if she may have some promise, what with hanging out while you cleaned the Garand, and all. Take her out shooting, she'll probably like it. Pretty soon, she'll be bugging you about getting a "bigger" safe, to hold all the rifles. Even if nothing happens between the two of you, at least she'll become more open-minded about firearm issues.

If....she becomes a gunnie.
And if...you gonna marry her.

Don't go house hunting.
Look for an ex bank building with big vault.
Walk-in gun safes are way cool.

Call me silly, but isn't four rifles the minimum?

1) Full Battle Rifle
2) Short Carbine
3) Cheap Plinker (usually 22lr)
4) Sniper

Lets not even get into shotguns or pistols.

Hell, the second I turned 18 back in 2000 I went out and bought an AR that day. I didnt even buy a pack of smokes or a porn. A month later I had my Rem. PSS and now im 21 and have 4 rifles and a pistol. I say the more the merrier. You can justify it by saying they are different calibers, serve different purposes, or just simply by saying "well this one is 2 inches longer than that one, and its just not the same" :D

You have four rifles total, or four Garands? Four Garands isn't excessive, they are appreciating in value.

The only "excuse" for having four rifles is;

1. You just started collecting 3 days ago

2. The rest are "in the mail".

3. You were recently robbed.

4. The rest are out to the "cleaners".

5. Your allowance is only $5 a week.

6. The room you spend most of your time in is "padded".

7. Your "roomie's" name is Bubba and the guards are anti-gun.

8. Your home and collection burnt to the ground.

9. You REALLY DO just like handguns.

10 You lent the rest of them to THR members six months ago and you are still waiting for them to be returned.:D

[snicker]

She can come over here and look at my small collection. I've only had my C&R for a year so I've got a bunch of catching up to do. Because of that wanting to catch up, UPS dropped off 4 rifles yesterday :D . I figure I should have at least one for every year that I've been alive. Once I reach that (and need a new excuse ;) ) I'll start on getting one for every year that the kids have been alive (with the intent of giving their collection to them once they move out). Etc, etc, etc  .

Greg, been there, done that, got the t-shirt. My wife, when we were first married 14 years ago, could not understand why I would have more than 3 guns! She even demanded that I buy no more so I would not turn into a gun freak. Did I meantion she hated guns?. We fought bitterly. She refused to even try shooting them.

So, I did what every red blooded gun-enthusiast would do (I am not a gun-freak), I bought more and did not tell her. I could actually write books on how to sneak guns in the house. In the mean time, I gave her time to get "used" to guns. Eventually, about 5 years ago, she shot my 22/45, 10/22, and then my Glock. She did good.

Currently, while she doesn't exactly love guns, she doesn't give me any crap about them. She realizes they haven't escaped from my safe and killed anyone lately on their own. This whole process took TIME. She had to get used to a new idea. Guns aren't evil.

I have over 20 guns in a very good safe. You better start now if you want to catch up.

You really need 4 Garands to make a good stack:

Ok, Iknow that three will get the job done.;)
If you are ever in MS bring her by my place, she should cut you quite a bit of slack after that.

She has more than four pairs of shoes, right? :scrutiny:

(Besides, if four rifles is "excessive," then I am way over the top into pure-t "decadence." :uhoh: )

Dave 3006,
You read my bio. That is exactly my situation, but we just made 15 years. Cannot for the life of me figure out why she has lasted 15 years. Though I would have run her off by now.
But yes, 4 rifles is excessive. On one hunt!
I quit introducing her to my rifles 13 years back and just sneak them into the house and lock them up in the safe. Now I need a BIGGER safe. How do I explain that for only having 3 rifles and two pistols :uhoh:
So after my bathroom renovation, I'm going to start stocking up on 3/16 steel plates and build a safe.

HankL thats an impressive vault door in the background, did you build the vault yourself or like C.R. Sam suggested did your just buy an old bank building?;)

Im considering building a reinfoced concrete and block vault in my basement.

Morning Tam, When I made the above post I was thinking that if glockstein got his ladyfriend by your place he would be set for life!

MB, I had it built. The neighbors got their panties in a wad at first because they thought a branch bank was going in.:uhoh:

Dave,

My biggest problem, with pistols anyway, is that when I bring a smaller one home she says "Oooh pretty" and I rarely get to see it again (except when I get to clean it, she doesn't like to clean them  ).

I have over 20 guns in a very good safe. You better start now if you want to catch up.

I've got a similar safe. However I'm well past overflow on that and am about to run out of room under the bed ;) . I meant catching up on my plan of getting one for each of the kid's years alive. I think I would go into withdrawl symptoms if I had to reduce myself to DiFi's one a month plan :D .

Yeah, my wife thought I just had 3 or 4 rifles all these years ..... until I made the mistake of leaving the safe door open while I cleaned one of my handguns. (Okay, she snuck up on me, what can I say ......)

She was only off by a couple dozen or so .... no biggie.

And, yes, she's not letting me hear the end it either.

Oh well ... she can be replaced!

I prefer to order mine 4 at a time, saves on shipping that way. Now if you have 4 of the SAME rifle, that's excessive. Unless they're M44's or 91-30's, or M48's, or Stevens 311's. Then you just have really good taste.:D

1 gun a month
ITS THE LAW

How many golf clubs in a full brace?
a dozen?

different games require different tools

show her this picture of a match set up Walther:

and this picture of a Co-pilot:

http://www.wildwestguns.com/CoPilot_And_Guide_Rifles/body_copilot_and_guide_rifles.html

two expensive guns with completely different usages

ask her to pick one to buy for you for christmas.
In making a choice, she will begin to disern a difference

i like the sporty blue one
but not for smiting bears

Kewl lever action. Barrel is obviously an after the fact so why no extended tube?:D

She used to give me that excessive crap. Tried the how many rings/shoes thing, no good, says shoes doan cost that much and jewelry collection doesn't number evenly.

Took her shooting more, aquired more jewelry, bang. She buys for me now and its about that time. The new AR doan count, we didn't buy it.:D

Rustyhammer, I have been lucky. I do not leave my safe door open. I don't know if she is aware how many guns are in there. It helps if you buy several guns of the same type (Garands). That way they all look alike.

Someday I will catch h*ll. Oh well, at least it is not today. Someday, we are bound to have another Rodney King riot or something. Then, my guns will be her best friend. That will be a good time to lay the cards on the table.

It is all about timing.

She says "Why do you have 4 rifles? Isn't that excessive?" Translation: this means "Tell me more about rifles. Why are there so many kinds? I'm curious about why you enjoy them so much, and I'm wondering if I'd like shooting too."

HankL, it sounds like you have good neighbors. They had their knickers in a twist when they guessed there was a bank branch going up, and then they relaxed when they learned that it was just storage for an impressive gun collection. Gotta like that.

4 rifles excessive? Oh my goodness! Lord no! I can't get enough rifles. Four? My oh my! More rifles, more shotguns, more pistols.....

You should set your significant other straight about the importance of your rifles. I did it with my wife. Truth be told I will never have enough in the way of firearms. I am a gunaholic and proud of it!

Fly320s, They are M1907 U.S. military slings. True to period but not usually issued with the Garand. I would rather not say where I got these but Turner makes and excellent reproduction.
