Does anyone know of any instructional videos or written instructions on the internet for cleaning a k98 Mauser? Cannot find any information regarding this subject so far.
I got a cleaning kit for it,but ignorant novice gun enthusiast (me) has no idea how to use the kit properly.
this is the kit i bought:

The "historical" cleaning kits for the K98, Garand, etc. aren't necessarily the best or easiest things to use for cleaning...
However, since you have it already, it is fairly easy to use. You drop the chain from the muzzle to the chamber, attach a cleaning brush (already wet with powder solvent) and pull it toward the muzzle, being careful to not drag the chain against the sides of the bore (protect the crown!)
You can probably wrap a cleaning patch around the brush, as I don't see a slotted tip in the kit, and use this to swab out the dissolved powder and finally apply a light coat of gun oil.
As soon as you can afford it, I would put this aside as a historical piece (part of the rifle's issued equipment) and get a modern 1-piece cleaning rod, modern brushes and jag tips.

I have rods and stuff at home. I use the old style kits for field cleaning. I use one with the Uzi and SKS.
I drop the chain in from the chamber to the muzzle. One end of the chain should have a loop for patches. The other end of the tobacco tin also opens up and is where you store the patches.

Thank you
I think i am going to buy modern cleaning supplies tomorrow.
I know the Ar15's require certain steps to use cleaning rods. Does the K98 have certain steps for cleaning them with rods? ( ex. only brush from chamber to muzzle or vice versa, only go one way...,etc.)
Will a 30. cal one peice cleaning rod work? I already have one for my M1.
I know they have 8mm brushes and jags. should i get a muzzle guard?
