What's the difference between a Smith & Wesson 66 and 686? I am familiar with neither. I checked the S&W literature but, I could not figure it out.

The 66 is the K-frame and the 686 is the L-frame. The L-frame is a little more beefier to handle a steady diet of .357's.

The 66 is a K-frame and the next size up from the 5 shot J-frame. Nice handy size running just over 30 ounces. My favorite Smith revo size.

The 686 is the L-frame and is the next size up from the 66. It has a larger frame that makes it more comfortable to shoot with magnums. They come in 6 and 7-shot flavors.

The model 66 has the "nipped off" forcing cone to accomodate the smaller frame and cylinder diameter. Nice gun (I own two) but not a good choice for lots of magnums.

And...
The 686 has a full length underlug. Goes to the muzzle. Heavier.

66 = a gun you'll have for your lifetime.
686 = a gun your grandchildren will pass along.
