I sprung $200 OTD with only a 4473 this after noon on a Marlin pump SG. I think it is a marlin model 96 , which was made 1896-1897. The last Pat date is 1896, and the model 1898 (which was made 1898-1905) I saw on a neat web page devoted to overhauling them had different markings all though it looked the same. It has a 30" barrel with only very little choke constriction, bout what we call skeet today. It has 2 3/4" chambers for sure. It is in 70% condition with fine wood and the blue gone plum on the reciever and gray with freckling on the barrel.
The web page about them is MOST informative! Appartently these guns were know as Widow Makers, because if the inertia release and the secondary sear fail they could slam fire out of battery if you held the trigger and the bolt could shewar a lug and come back atcha! In reallity IF you inspect and keep the gun clean that is NOT gonna happen. Reccomended is 2 1/2 dram loads and keeping it under 3 drams. I have 100 Navy Arms Black Powder #6 shells I been hoarding they should make a statement at SASS ! The gun is already dissasembled by me this evening, it is the most ingenious design I've ever seen! It takes down and the lock up is adjustable! It hold 6 shells in the mag tube! The bolt and hammer come waay out so your hand cannot be above the tang! I am stoked and going back out till midnight to bronze wool it on the rusty parts, and take it out of the vat of marvel mistery oil I got the parts soaking in. It was bone dry when I got it and didn't function well which is why a great looking rare antique was $180!:D
