Personally I think the prosecutor overplayed the "security freak" angle. He tried to paint the pastor as nuts because he had a security system and carried a firearm. Nevermind that anyone who can afford a security system in Big Lake has one, and virtually everyone has a firearm. The jury may tune him out because of this.
The more troublesome question is why he continued to shoot, esp. out the window as the goblin was running away. But frankly in that situation who knows what you'd do. It's a tough call, but the jury did get to view the scene and I'd trust their findings.
