Mail-in-Match for Fellow THR Members!

Announcing a Monthly Mail-In-Match for Fellow THR Members!

CONCEPT: A monthly, informal “postal” shooting match where fellow THR members (age 21 and over only) shoot a specific number of shots at ONE target ONE time and mail in for scoring, competing with fellow THR members and a chance for adulation and bragging rights.

IMPLEMENTS: Each month will feature a specific type of gun, caliber and course of fire. Various Pistols, Rifles and Shotguns will be featured throughout the year. Each match will be broken out into 2-3 classes based on the specifics of that month’s weapon. Classes will be based on the weapon used, NOT the shooter. Each month will also include an “Open Class” for those without access that month’s featured weapon.

MATCH:
1. Print out ONE and ONLY ONE copy of the month’s target
2. Take all the practice shots you want at a similar target, but you only get ONE CHANCE at each month’s target. Please print out only ONE target per shooter each month.
3. When you’re ready, shoot the course of fire at the target, take as long as you like
4. Fill in your counted score, fill out the information on the target and sign
5. Mail it in to Mail in Match, PO Box 24211, Minneapolis, MN 55424-0211 for competition. Targets MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE LAST DAY OF THE MONTH to qualify, so figure in time to mail from your location to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where your virtual range officer resides.
6. If you have access to a scanner or digital camera, you can send a digital image of your target to ReadyontheRight through THR or to MailinMatch@Yahoo.com.

SCORING: Add up hits in each ring for your score. X’s count as ten and are used to break ties. If you break the line into the higher ring, you get the higher score. Two or more bullets through the same hole? I’ve heard this happens, so if you’re lucky enough to have it happen to you, please note on your target and score it. In general, scoring questions will lean towards the shooter.

A NOTE ON THE TARGET: The quality of the target is not the best for this first match. I chose speed vs. perfection to allow competition in January. The target is a NRA B-3 50’ Rapid fire shrunk down to roughly 66% for 10 yards. The image is not the best and regular office paper will be more difficult to score than target paper. Please bear with me on this and realize that everyone is stuck with the same image.

The Rules:
-Treat all guns as if they were always loaded
-Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
-Be sure of your target and what’s behind it
-SAFELY follow the course of fire described for each month’s match
-Only shoot where it is safe and legal to do so
-If you own or have access to that month’s featured weapon, use that weapon, otherwise participate in the Open Class
-No benches, shooting sticks, trees, partners or other steadying device allowed
-Only shooters 21 years of age and older are allowed to compete.
-Ammo – Feel free to use any ammunition you like, as long as it is safe. The bottom line is to SHOOT SAFELY.

CLASSES: Classes will be slightly different for each match. Some will be more difficult to define than others, so use your best judgment since you will be selecting your own class. In general, classes will be:
STOCK – Includes a standard gun and sites for that class of weapon. Gunsmithing improvements such as trigger work, tightening, drifting sites, etc. that do not replace out of the box parts can be considered “stock” class.
IMPROVED – Includes drop-in or add-on improvements such as improved barrel, improved sites, new trigger, springs that reduce trigger pull poundage, etc. Please include your Les Baer or any other “production” weapons made by the custom gunsmiths who guarantee a specific MOA in this class.
SCOPED – Any gun of the featured variety using a red dot, telescopic or any other kind of scope for target acquisition
OPEN CLASS – This class is to allow those without access to this month’s featured weapon to participate in the match. If you own or have access to the month’s featured weapon, use it. Otherwise use your favorite gun or dust off one you never get to shoot -- from your scoped .22 bull barrel on up to your .50 cal Desert Eagle. Please only use pistols for pistol matches, rifles for rifle matches and shotguns for shotgun matches (yes, I am hoping to figure out some kind of shotgun match).

QUESTIONS? Feel free to PM your virtual range officer - ReadyOnTheRight on THR or e-mail MailinMatch@Yahoo.com with your questions. I may not always be able to get back to you immediately, so if you just approach any issues that are not covered in the rules honestly and safely, we should all have some fun with this. THR owners and moderators are not involved in this, so please don’t bother Oleg or anyone else but me about this match (unless of course you have a problem with my behavior on THR).

MATCH IMPROVEMENTS: If this mail-in Shooting match proves to be popular, we will likely standardize on better targets, clearer rules, etc. For now, we will start with targets printed on regular office paper and score them the best we can. Let’s get this monthly match started and complete and improve from there. Please post suggestions for improvements on THR under match announcements and results. No whining please.

MATCH NOTIFICATION: Matches and results will be posted in the General forum on www.thehighroad.org with a linked notification in the forum that most closely fits with that month’s featured weapon.

HONOR CODE: Remember: “Character means Doing the Right Thing Even When Nobody's Looking.” Print out only ONE target per shooter per month. Shoot at it, fill it out, sign it and send it in.

THE FIRST MATCH: The .38 Special/.357 Wheelgun is by far the most recommended first pistol on THR, so it’s perfect for our first Mail-In Shooting Match. Course of fire will be 6 shots at 10 yards.

TO PARTICIPATE: Print out your target from one of these sites:

http://www.olegvolk.net/postaltarget.pdf Acrobat
http://www.olegvolk.net/postaltarget.doc MS Word

Print out your target, shoot and get in the mail so it gets to Minneapolis by January 31. Shoot safely and GOOD LUCK!

Guess I'll have to ask runt for a loan of her (formerly my) SW686+ or her Taurus 617 or SW640. If you like, email me the TIF version of the target and and I'll clean it up and make available for download form my server.

I sure hate to discourage shooting by younger folks, but since guns aren't generally available to those under 21, I couldn't really think of a way to establish parental consent to keep myself out of trouble with parents and still keep this somewhat simple. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

If you are shooting this with your kids, please sign it for them. For those of you old enough to fight for your country, but too young to defend yourself with a weapon:cuss: , I'll try to figure out a way for next month -- probably just a signature box on the target for a parent or guardian.

I'm in. As soon as Oleg gets the target uploaded, I'll shoot, and email a copy to you.

P.S. Be honest! It's not like you are going to win $100,000 for having the best target. This could be fun if everyone plays fair.

I'm only having luck with Adobe Acrobat files (.pdf) to keep the target size consistent, so that's what you'll get when you e-mail me.

.pdf files seem to be what most of the online target folks use too. Some programs seem to print the .jpg file out as a 12" target, and that just ain't fair.:D

If you don't already have it, you can get Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 free at www.adobe.com so you can open and print out the target.

Uhm...

Hate to say something...

But it is legal to own longarms at 18, and in my current state of Residence for someone under 21 to own and carry a handgun as long as they don't buy it from an FFL...

I have a license to carry, shoot in IDPA, and have shot intercollegiate bullseye, and btw... am a USMC Officer Candidate.

I'm a 20 year old College Junior... I don't understand why someone as responsible as I am is being excluded.

Any barrel length restrictions/requirements? I mean, using a 10" Dan Wesson isn't fair to those shooting 2" snubbies.

I also have to figgure out which gun to shoot. Not to mention that I'll have to do it outside and it's 14 deg right now. {shiver}
I could pit the .357 bbl on my contender and shoot open...;)

Could a MOD make this a sticky post so it stays on top, easier to find when you need it.

PUMC_TomG - e-mail sent.

Here are the "Classes" for this month's match:
_____STOCK - barrels up to 6”
_____IMPROVED - barrels more than 6” and/or guns with significant, expensive improvements
_____SCOPED - Any scoped .38/.357 Wheelgun
_____OPEN PISTOL CLASS – Any pistol

So your 10" Dan Wesson would classify as Improved. The Encore would be Stock or Improved -- based on the barrel length, or scoped if scoped -- but please use a 6-shooter if you've got one.

:D

Bedlamite has gone above and beyond and offered to host a website for this. He or I will post a link when it's ready.

Our first match contestant!

Okiecruffler ("Just your typical vegetarian, pistol packing, Buddhist, NRA member.") shot a 53/60-2X in Stock class. (Not a 52 - one of your 7s broke the line into 8 as I see it).

I shot a 42 this afternoon, but then it was also 15 degrees and windy, and I was shooting my snubbie with gloves on, and it was starting to get dark. Do we have a "cheesy excuses for poor shooting" class? I'll scan the target when I get home from work in the morning.

The work in progress website is here (http://members.lsol.net/beebe/thrpm/)
I'll add more as targets and scores become available.

I'm in Tom's shoes ... well not actually in his shoes, but I share his situation. I'm a 20 year old college student who has carried for two years since I got my Indiana carry permit. Kcustom45 is also a legal CCW licensee who is not yet 21. There are probably dozens more on THR.
I sure hate to discourage shooting by younger folks, but since guns aren't generally available to those under 21, I couldn't really think of a way to establish parental consent to keep myself out of trouble with parents and still keep this somewhat simple. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.
Keep you out of trouble? Sorry, I don't see how you could get in trouble for holding a contest. Is it not the duty of the applicants to said contest to be sure they are responsible with their weapons, and have permission to use them? Maybe there needs to be a Chief LEO signoff too, just to be sure that the shooter isn't a felon. ;)
If you are shooting this with your kids, please sign it for them. For those of you old enough to fight for your country, but too young to defend yourself with a weapon , I'll try to figure out a way for next month -- probably just a signature box on the target for a parent or guardian.
Frankly, even the idea of forcing a parental sign off for anyone under 21 (regardless of whether their state allows CCW for 18 year olds) seems silly to me. I fail to see any valid concern that this stipulation would address but, it's your game, and I respect your rules.

Hey Ready, thanks for organizing this. My 52 will be on the way to you in tomorrow morning's mail.

My advice to everyone is TAKE YOUR TIME. After my first two 10s, my growing confidence was spurred on by my even-faster growing cockiness, causing me to rush, sending my last few shots all over the place.

And another thing, don't practice too much. You probably shoot your best with your first shot of the day, but taking 12 shots or so will still leave you close to your best form and technique. Good luck to all.

Yeah, well, uh, you see...I have a S&W MP .38 Special; the fixed notched rear and stepped front sight on this precursor of the Model 10 aren't the best when the target is black...as is this initial Postal Match Target. So, I am snail-mailing my target and ReadyOnTheRight, you'll notice the dreaded "three-into-one ragged hole"....unfortunately for me, they landed in the 7-ring.
But, it's just for fun, right? Like, if I had my buddie's 686 with white-outlined target sights, and 8 3/8" Bbl., I wouldn't be winning like Gollum....my Precious.... :what:

Seriously, I had a lot of fun and look forward to many more Mail-In Matches!

I'm glad we're getting both interest and suggestions for improvement. I really like how these 20-year olds push back on unfair rules. These guys will do well in life and also fight for RKBA I'm sure.

I was playing "CYA" with the 21-year old rule so I could get this out quickly. I knew THR members would quickly solve any glitches in the process and rules. If you can legally shoot, cross out "21" and put in "18" on your target before signing. If you're under 18, please have a parent or guardian sign.

For next month, we'll probably just say "By signing you affirm that you are not legally prohibited from owning firearms" or "Contest open to all shooters legally permitted by their local, state, and federal laws to own or operate the intended weapon. Minors may enter when shooting takes place under the immediate supervision of a parent/guardian." or somesuch.

I'm looking at the target I'll shoot later this week taped 30 feet away. It sure looks small!

As THR is a great board used by people all over the world would it be possible to add the option of scanning and mailing the target?
You have to consider postage costs & delivery times from Europe, Australia and so on.

Just a minor concern. I printed the first one with Acrobat but it was recycled paper and I wanted a clean sheet. Well I used the MS Word for real one. I laid it on other one and noticed it was larger. So I measured them. Acrobat the 9 ring in black was about 1.81" The MS one is 1.94.
If I go to outside line it is MS 3.92" and 3.70" on other. So which is right one to use. I know it is not much and odds are it is a problem with my computer/printer. Thanks.

Mal H
January 20, 2003, 07:00 PM
larry - The difference you measured is more than 1/3 the diameter of a .357. So it is a big difference which can affect the outcome of the competition.

I printed the Acrobat target and the 9 ring is also around 1.8 inches. Haven't shot it yet.

We've got to have a standard sized target to be fair to all entrants. Almost everyone will have or can get Acrobat, but not everyone will have the same word processing application.

Suggestions?

bowhnter
January 20, 2003, 07:58 PM
Yeah. Since acrobat reader is free that would seem like the way to go. JMHO. Everyone can DL it and have the same size target.

ReadyontheRight
January 20, 2003, 08:40 PM
Agreed. Let's standardize on the Adobe version. I converted directly from Word to Adobe but it did shrink it.:banghead: Gotta work on my virtual range officer Q.C. Oh well, this is all for fun.

When I get the results, I'll try to judge them fairly vs. the Adobe document if targets are off-size - especially at the upper ends of accuracy.

We'll use Acrobat only next month.

Go ahead and scan and e-mail me targets, but they might be more difficult to judge than postal versions - again it's all for fun so do what's easiest. I have the free Yahoo mailbox at MailinMatch@Yahoo.com with limited space. It fills up quickly, so resend if it gets bounced back to you.

While you are working on the virtual R.O. quality control, you should take a look at the "oops" by 12 o'clock on the 7 ring. :o

Are there any rules on what kind of climate-controls can be present? Just to make it even with people shooting in 15 degree weather with gale-force winds. I'm thinking an indoor range with the thermostat set to a balmy 70 degrees would allow me to shed all manner of bulky clothing and shoot the postal match au-naturel. :uhoh:

Minors may enter when shooting takes place under the immediate supervision of a parent/guardian." or somesuch. That was exactly what I was thinking. Honestly nothing pissed me off more than being 18 and not being able to buy a handgun. So I appreciate your attempt to get around further discrimination against the youth of this nation.

I like the idea of the shoot. It might get some more of us to get off the computer and go shoot. I unfortunately do not have a .357!!! So please read my mind and make the next one something I have! I will let you know if you made the right guess.

I also like the idea of scanning. It wouldn't be that hard. Just give the instructions to the scanner on how to measure it themselves and have them send the scan. Put a disclaimer that if you happen to be in the top ten, you might have to send it in for confirmation.

Postal shoot = Great idea! :D

Don't worry too much about this run, ROTR. No one expected a flawless first competition. Too many variables, and some of them weren't even known at the beginning. Maybe we can rerun the same .38/.357 contest a little later since it is a popular caliber.

ROTR. I didn't mean to bust your chops. I am very glad you are willing to take the time to set this up. We all realize this is a work in progress. I just felt I should bring up the target size thing. I had calipers at arms length so decided to check.
I plan to shoot target Tues night. If I had kept my mouth shut I could have used the larger target. :) Maybe I can enlarge it a little. Or shoot a blank page and center target on holes. :) :) JK
Anyway the old 66 my first gun purchased by me is oiled up and ready to go.

Ready,
I sent you a scan of my target in tif format. If you prefer another format let me know. JPG may have been faster to send and receive.

Anyway it was 19 degrees when I shot. Only fired 6 rounds for practice (to get the dust out of the barrel) before the official shoot. I used my EAA 380 because I don't have a 357 or 38 wheelgun. I guess I could have used my wife's Rossi model 88 but she would have made me clean it. LOL

The EAA 380 was my first concealed carry gun and I still use it for deep cover carry most of the time. This pistol has fired approximately 20,000 rounds (I should do EAA comercials). I bet there aren't a lot of EAA 380's that have seen that much use.

I'll be interested to here the story behind other targets.

Thoguht I'd show a pic of the conditions I shot under. This is my backstop. It's approximately 110 yds out my backdoor up the hillside. I have a 5yd wide clearing going all the way up to it so I can take longer shots with my rifles.

Scott

P.S. yes, it was a pain to tote those railroad ties up the hill. The black squares are half inch thick rubber mats nailed up 5 deep. The mats catch most of the bullets without leting them through to the wood. Some of the rifle bullets do make it through though.

Well it was -2 already and dropping. So I chickened out again. I feel as temp goes below zero the odds of problems increase exponentillly. Being brokd down at night in -15 before windchill is not my idea of fun. Hopefully it will be nicer next week. That or shoot it outside.

Just shoot and have fun. If anyone has a few fliers, we only count the six holes on the paper.

Well apparantly I sucked worse than I thought... Tight little groups? Heck I'd have been happy with ANY kind of group.... :scrutiny:

Did I have fun? But of course, anytime at the range is fun..... :D

I will put the target in the mail tomrrow and hope it gets to you in time but if not, it's not that big of a deal... Measly 22 points.... :what: :D

Guess I should practice with David's guns a little more often....:D

It would be nice to know how many people are participating.
Can you tell us a number?

Thanks

Boondocker -- Your e-mail did come to me in 36 files. After 30 it filled up my mailbox.

It's probably best if you just mail it via classic mail to Mail in Match, PO Box 24211, Minneapolis, MN 55424-0211.

Glock_17 -- I think we're up to 20+ participants at this point. Hopefull we'll have more, but that's pretty good for the late notice.

BTW - Bedlamite has put together a great target for February's match. It will be posted Feb 1st.

Rats! I just found this now...I guess I'll wait for next month's match.

BTW, I appreciate that you'll be changing it to allow younger shooters. I may only be 19, but I legally own 4 handguns and compete in bullseye pistol matches for my university, as well as high power rifle, IDPA, and Cowboy Action. I like to think that I am a safe and responsible shooter, regardless of my age. ;)

Ian, there's still time if you get the target in the mail within the next day or two.

Get the target here: http://members.lsol.net/beebe/thrpm/

Scores will be there and a scan of the best target in each class will be posted each month.

How do you guys clean the powder burns off it?

Just use cookie cutters! :neener:

Whats with the cutoff date of the end of the month to receive the target?

How about this for a schedule?

Targets have to be postmarked by the end of the month (Jan 31st) for scoring and posting scores.
Scores posted for previous month (Jan) on website/etc on the middle of this month (Feb 15).
Target for this month (Feb) posted on website/etc on the middle of last month (Jan 15th).

So, there is a 45-day or so period with which to shoot the target. Felt rushed to do the January match, since its the first.

Mal H
January 29, 2003, 02:12 PM
Frohickey brings up a good point. Contestants will have fairly good control over when a letter gets postmarked, but little or no control over when it gets delivered. Might be considered for future matches or even this one, no reason why not.

M58 - the distance was supposed to be 10 yards, not 10 inches! ;)

ROR is doing a good thing. I understand he has to set limits and unless folks want to pony up some $$$ or time to help him he can run things by his rules. That said if my target makes it in a day late I hope he can overlook it. :)
I shot IMO for me a DANG good target and better then I did when using the S&W for league shooting. Of course one flyer for last round ruined the grouping. :( :(
I am waiting for Feb. target as I plan to be out of area for a while. At least know what type of gun to bring with me.
Hint 9mm semi auto would make it so I don't have to bring a second gun thru TSA.....

ReadyontheRight
January 29, 2003, 07:50 PM
Since this is the first match and it got started late in the month, a day or two late is OK, but I won't include any stragglers I get after the results are posted. So if you're shooting in Germany and haven't mailed it yet, borrow a scanner and e-mail your target.

The February match featured weapon and target will be posted February 1st, so you all should have plenty of time.

Hint: It should be a plinkin' good time!

Just a suggestion for next month. Why not have 2 divisions, junior and adult. Just use the NRA and USA shooting definitions. A junior is anyone 20 or under. You enter the adult division the year in which you turn 21. Or you could fudge a bit and make it when you turn 21. I got kinda miffed when I won the state junior olympic match in December, but could not attend the national match in April because I turned 21 four months later.

An idea for future targets scanned. Put a piece of yellow/red/orange/blue paper behind target. Then all the hits both in the black and outside will really stand out. I personally could not tell where all your hits were. Just a thought for those scanning them in.

ReadyontheRight
February 1, 2003, 08:27 PM
M58 -- That must be a digital photo. Scanned targets show up pretty well, but larry_minn is right, a lighter paper behind a photographed target would help with scoring. Since this is the first month, I'll still let you get it in if you want to fill out the info, sign and put a light paper behind the target for another photo.

We are still working on getting the February target posted on a website. The featured weapon will be the good old .22lr rifle. E-mail me at mailinmatch@yahoo.com to get the .pdf file if you want go shoot your .22 rifle before we officially post the announcement and the target.

Great turnout for the first match! I'll have the results posted next weekend.

I just printed out the rifle target. The picture of the can is about 10 percent smaller than an actual can. I measure 59 millimeters for the target and about 65 for the diameter of my mountain dew can.

Is that what it should be? I don't want to cheat but I also don't want to be handicapped. And BTW, thanks for the great idea of THR matches. I'm looking forward to this.

I might not have too many chances as I only have a .45...with no place to shoot my .22 at 50 yds in this stupid state!

bedlamite
February 3, 2003, 07:54 PM
Yes, It is a little smaller than actual size, the original was 2.5"x4.8". That must have been lost in the conversion to .pdf, but as long as everyone's target is the same size, it shouldn't matter.

Mal H
February 3, 2003, 07:55 PM
Very cool idea for a match!

griz, just aim for the X and it won't matter what size the can is. ;)

Jmurman, why not make a road trip to the NRA range for the 50 yd target. Or you can shoot the can 40 times, 2 for each 25 yards. :D

You know... for the Febuary match... ROTR could have just gotten everyone to shoot at a real (pre-rinsed) beverage can and have it sent to his P.O.Box.

I bet you can get a little recycling money out of that. :D

This is a cool target but I wish it was a Caffine free Pepsi cause I hate that stuff as thats all the wife buys. YUCK Looks I am going to have to drink some before I shoot and lay off the coffee at 50 yards lol. Boon :D

BTW, does my 10" bull barrell Ruger MKII count as a rifle?

If you don't have a rifle, go ahead and use a pistol for this. Use the same classifications:

Standard = regular barrel up to 6"
Improved = barrel over 6", bull barrel or other significant improvements
Scoped = scoped
Open = any other pistol

Good luck at 50 yards! Pistol scores will likely get honorary mention.

Or -- get yourself a .22 rifle -- what a great excuse to get a new sub- $200 gun that shoots dirt cheap ammo accurately!

Might have to question Mr Hines 3rd 10 in open class (just being facetious and overly competative, actually that was some good shooting ).

Note: my last name doesn't have the extra a. Only the rich side of the Vaughn family use the a before the n. I'm one of the poor ones.

Really enjoyed the match. I will be participating in the Feb match after I finish setting up the 5.0 Adobe.

Just for fun...
The gun I used was a pretty basic S&W 686-3 4". Factory white-outline rear, orange ramp front sights. The hammer spring and rebound spring have been replaced with Wolff's lightest offerings.

The ammo was handloaded, R-P .38 brass, WSP primers, Remington 148gr HBWCs seated flush, under 2.7gr Bullseye. The Remington bullets are the only thing special about this load, I tested them against WCs from Hornady, Speer, and Rainier, and they were the clear winner. I shot a group with them the previous week that made my official target look like a pattern!

I would like to talk to that JR Hines fellow myself, 'cause that looks like the target I shot.
Well, you folks can call me anything you want, 'cept late to lunch! The full name is John Rhines, but after 60 yrs of Hines, Rinds, Ryans, ... it makes little or no difference.
For the record, a CZ-75 compact, box stock, 2-handed, 115 gr NRA range ammo, nothing special, great fun.
Now where is my gallery gun?
