Takedown Marlin, would you buy one?..

I have been looking at these guns for quite awhile now, haven't bought one yet though.

Like anyone else, I like interesting guns......so my question is, would you buy a $495 Marlin, then pay almost $2k to have it converted to a takedown and tuned? http://www.acura-cl.com/ubb/eek.gif

I'm no stranger to custom guns, have a few, but just for the fact that it's still a Marlin all said and done is a sticking point.

I'm fairly decisive on most purchases, but this one spooks me a bit....even though it's definitely a cool toy.

I would definitely appreciate some thoughts/opinions.

Thanks

just for the fact that it's still a Marlin

Every custom gun is just a "something" when you start out..

And with that, I bid this thread adieu...

I would if I had the cake to burn and wanted a takedown gun. I am very fond of Marlins, no one makes a better lever gun these days IMO. Marlin is high end in the class that you refer to, the Kreighoff of levers if you will.

Would I invest the money into a take-down marlin. You bet and as a matter of fact I did it about 4 years ago and dont regret it one bit. I love my co-pilot and this is 1 rifle I will never sell or trade. Well worth the money IMO.

I know that, but I just think of Marlins as ho hum quality guns....not bad, but not that great either.

At the above price, it still uses the stock barrel.

I love the idea of a takedown lever action, just want to justify the cost in my head. Maybe having a few drinks will put it in perspective. http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/images/smilies/drunk.gif

Thanks for the reply lilbiggun, that's certainly good to hear.http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/images/smilies/cheers.gif

I assume you're talking about one of the Wild West Guns packages or something similar. They're absolutely gorgeous looking rifles, but you might want to question your need for spending an extra thousand on a take-down. Yeah, it fits into a little case, but would you leave a $2000 rifle in your car? You can get a beautiful tricked-out one-piece Marlin from WWG for a lot less money. By the way, I've been to Smithtown, bud, and I'm assuming that's just your mailing address. You spend most of your time in Alaska, right?

I don't spend any time in Alaska, this takedown can't be any more useless than my 82A1 is living in Smithtown though ;) .

Is it worth the extra $1k, I don't know.....just think its neat.

Was actually going to go with Dave Clay to do the work, not WWG.

I would if I could scrape up that kind of $$$.

FWIW, it's been my experience that custom gunsmiths won't work on guns that aren't worth working on.

If it was something that I wanted or needed and could afford, of course I would. If you want it get it.

This is excellent advise coming from a gentleman, John how is the Barrett 99 treating you? Assuming you still have it, I hope you're getting good use out of it.
