Check out "The Underhammer Society" blog for July 18, 2009 about the repeating underhammer harmonica rifle. The whole page is filled with pictures and information about different underhammers including flintlocks:

There's more pictures of breaking down the harmonica rifle on the July 11th, 2008 entry about 1/2 down the same blog page.

Reminds me of my Crossman air gun. :D

I saw one once, but wasn't into black powder at the time, except for blowing stumpd and rocks, so didn't pay much attention to it.

Wow, two of my favorite toys. BP firearms and harmonicas. What could be better? Oh yeah, having one of those rifles.

Now that is one sweet project! Would I ever love to make up a rifle like that and then show up with two 5 shot load strip magazines for cowboy action. Can you IMAGINE the looks ! ? ! ? ! ? :D It would be nice to have a faster/better way to index the magazine though.

A real "answer to a question that no one asked" is the under underhammer flintlock in the section below the harmonica gun.... :D

BDG, google for "harmonica pistol" and you'll get a few hits showing some old time handguns using the same idea. Seems to have been a short lived option prior to the rather more obvious revolver solution.

ERiRider,

If the revolving cylinder had been more obvious folks would have been making more of them a lot sooner. Fact is the revolver was more difficult to make and have work with hand tools. Colt's big contribution to revovver making was basically designing the machine tools to make the darn things doable and affordable. FOlks like JMBs father John Browning made harmonica guns because they were easier to make by hand than revolvers.

The elder Browning's guns could be made to take a bar or harmonica of up to 21 rounds, though appearently Browning thought the three shot was the best option for normal use. Wonder if Bill Ruger was a decendant? Actually Browning thought the three shot magazine provided better balance and handling than the largert magazines. And truth be told I like the look of a Mini-14 with the five rounder in place better than the larer mags. It sue is nice to have 20 and 30 round Mini-14 maga avainable though and I'll bet a few folks opted for a three shot"carry" magazine and a bunch more shot spare on the harmonica guns.

The harmonica guns always remind me of the early feed strip fed Machineguns and like those guns could be fed additional strips if they were available quickly and easily how ever clumbsy they idea may have seemed.

This thread needed to be updated with a new link.
The Underhammer Society has a blog page about a contemporary convertible underhammer harmonica rifle. It breaks down to convert from being a single shot underhammer into a 5 shot harmonica repeater.
It's a 5 shot .36 and there's a 33 second video of it being fired that's located about 1/2 way down the page. What slows down its rate of fire is the indexing system for the sliding chamber block.
