OKAY...

You just got $10,000. It's pure mad money. You don't need to save it for a rainy day, you don't need to pay off any bills, you don't need to buy your wife any kind of gift (cause she's getting her own $10,000) and you've decided to spend it all on GUNS or GUN related stuff. What do you get?

MY List:

Some kind of Bushmaster with a 20" barrel 5.56mm with Scope
A Springfield Armory 1911 type pistol
A Springfield Amory M1A
A Savage 10FP in .308 (???) with a top of the line 4 - 12X Scope
A Dillon 550B Progressive with dies & accesories for .45 Colt, 5.56mm, .308 and .45ACP
3 or 4 High Cap Mags for my Glock 22
A very high quality, very cool Cowboy Action double holster pistol rig
Ivory Grips for my Ruger Vaqueros
Marlin 1894 Cowboy Lever Gun in .45 Colt
A complete Wyatt Earp style costume for Cowboy action Shooting

OKAY now I've still got a bunch of money left over - what to buy? What to buy?

What would you buy?

(there's a method to my madness - ;) )

Some great ideas already listed.

I would include a crate of CZ-52's and a crate of nagants. I think the CZ's are a great buy and I would love to pop the lid off a crate of nagants, put a piece of glass on it and use it as a coffee table. Great convo piece!

Oh, and if you don't have one I would custom order a Randall knife for yourself. Not that expensive really, just a long wait.

Two flattop 20" Armalite AR-10s, 20 or so magazines, and good optics for both. That's $5000 right there (ouch!)

Two Steyr M40s (been wanting to try those out!) Ten magazines, night sights, Kydex holsters from Comp-Tac. Around $1000.

A Pardini PC45 with a Doctersight and Rink grips. $1500.

A Dillon 550b with all the fruit. Dies for .40, .45ACP, .308, .223, etc. $600.

Basic and Advanced pistol courses with Matt Burkett. $600, last time I checked.

LFI-I. $500 around here.

$800 left. I dunno, that 15th century Cut-and-Thrust sword from Christian Fletcher would sure look good hanging above the fireplace. Or maybe buy a Wilton Square Wheel belt grinder and finally make my own...

BobHAJ said:
I'd buy 921 shares of Ruger stock. Then use the $736.00 in dividends each year to buy guns.

Being a Financial Analyst by trade I thought to myself - that's worth looking into.

Ruger financially is a fairly strong company - much smaller than I imagined but in good financial shape. Based on cash flow, balance sheet, EPS for this year and a relatively high P/E I consider that Ruger is a bit over priced at the recent $10.85/share. If they were paying .80 a share dividend on their annual EPS that gives about 7.5% annual return on investment - which is a really, really good dividend rate.

Problem is I don't think that this year they're gonna be able to pay that 80 cents a share at least not out of earnings. They're on track to make between .30/share to .50/share annual EPS. Currently for Q1-Q3 they're at .35/share. There's a real possibility that 4Q03 they might lose 2 or 3 cents a share (thus the .30 cent estimate). Personnaly I think Q4 will be in the .10 to .15 range. If they match their best 4Q ever (.40 in 1999) they will still only make 75 cents/share for 2003 and no company I know of is going to dip into retained earnings so they can pay out a historical 80 cents per share annual dividend (stranger things have been known to happen though).

In addition to get a dividend in 2003 you had to be a stockholder of record in 2001 (another weirdness). If you buy the stock today you will not collect any of that high dividend rate until 2005 if the date of record follows their historical pattern.

You have to really hold Ruger stock to get that 7.5% return (which for long term investors or those investing for income isn't a bad thing).

Another factor is that Ruger stock trades in a pretty narrow range ($10 to $14) on a 12 to 14 month cycle so it's really not even a candidate for swing traders. Might be ok for those who hold for 1 to 2 years.

Ruger stock looks to be a good deal for those investing for income and who plan to hold it for years and years. Those looking for capital appreciation (me) should look elsewhere.

Other than hardcroming what I've got, I'd buy a pre-ban AR with a lot of mags and ammo, a few P14 mags, maybe a P13 and some extra mags as well. The rest would likely get spent on my cars, since most of my gun purchases were made with money meant for the cars. Of course, I might also buy an import or something good on gas that I'd have no intrest in hot rodding, since my current daily driver is a rattletrap.

Good handgun in a common caliber (.38/.357, .40, .45ACP, maybe 9x19), with good holster, lots of magazines|speedloaders, lots of ammo and spare parts.

Good small pistol in common caliber, suitable for deep concealment, with holster, mags, etc. Preferably something from the VPC's "pocket rocket" list.:)

Homeland defense rifle, lots of magazines, enough spare parts to build another (or maybe a "parts gun"), _lots_ of ammo.

Shotgun. Mossberg 500 or equivalent. My only shotgun right now is more of an heirloom (Grandpa's gun) than a working gun. Ammo, tools, accessories, etc.

It wasn't the guns so much( I lie) as the price of some of the hunts... Africa, Spain, South America... the classes and training are cheap in comparison...oh and Sam wanted a Steak for lunch...:p

Dunno what all, but a buddy goes... driven bird hunts, red deer, some other critters...I've seen pics and, well , Hemingway hunted there 'nuff said.:D
I need to check into it more, but the countryside was breathtaking, people great, food awesome...and the hunts...he goes back every year.

Hey, why not ? Now Scheuy , does anything I do make sense...see, there ya go.:D

Thanks for the RGR analysis. I've been watching RGR for several years now and have bought two lumps at $7.62 and $8.49 and I don't believe I've gotten less than $.80 dividend. Most of which I have poured back into RGR. So at that price I'm averaging about 10% dividend.
Thanks
Bob

Re, what is there to hunt in Spain??

Spanish wipe out plenty of birds in the Pyrenees every migration, upsets the EU a little. There are foxes, rabbits, weaselly things and in the northern mountains (along the flat top of Spain) there are wolves and the odd bear. Good luck being allowed to shoot bear in Europe, they are a little endangered but you might get away with it in Romania. The Spanish say that if you go into the hills looking for wolves without a gun you will see them and hear them with a modicum of skill. Go into the hills with a gun and you will not get sight nor sound of a wolf.

1) $2000 on training classes or private instruction (also probably get training needed to get NRA Instructor certs)
2) Kimber CDP, either the 3" or 4" compact models (used $800-1000, new $1000-1200)
3) Colt Python ($800-1000)
4) S&W M57 (~$600)
5) 20" Bushmaster (pretty standard, nothing special) ($800)
6) M1A ($1200)
7) Garand (nothing special, just a shooter in decent condition) ($800)
8) HK P7 ($1000)
9) NAA Guardian in .32acp or Beretta Tomcat ($350)
10) Lever carbine in .357mag (~$400)
11) Ruger Vaquero in .45lc ($450)
12) Remington 870 or Lanber O/U ($270-450 depending upon model)
13) $200 in reloading equipment and supplies

If I dropped about $750 from training budget I'd add a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded.

Edit:

I left a few things off my list that I really want:
-Winchester Featherweight Classic (or something to that effect) in .243 or 6.5x55
-Howa in .243 or 6.5x55
-CZ in same
-one of the above in .308 as well
-M1 Carbine

I don't know what I'd take off my list to get these. Man I hate prioritizing.

Good luck finding one for less than $10K. If you did, most likely it would be "shooter grade."

I saw one used only by a state trooper unit in top condition on Impact Guns for exactly $10,000

Well, I could probably spend the ten grand if given enough time to think, but off hand I can only think of a few things I would really like to have and I could afford them now without the 10k. I just haven't taken the effort to do it.

New safe (about $3500)
Good spotting scope
Stuff to shoot a rifle for accuracy off a bench: bags and a rest
45 Colt set up for my Dillon 550 loader
A few good scopes
I could probably spend the rest sending the guns I already own away to have custom work done on them. I have a couple dozen very little things I would like done that probably wouldn't cost $100/each. And I would like to have two 1911s melted and night sights installed by Clarks. I have at least three rifles that I would like to get new barrels, new stocks and a complete accuracy/action job done on.
That would probably pretty easily take care of 10 grand. I knew I could do it if I put my mind to it.

Heh.

Heh, heh.

Let me count the ways....

1. Custom rifle, built to the following specs:
Nesika Bay or Stolle action, Kreiger barrel, chambered in .308 and throated to 168 gr. MatchKings, with a McMillan A4 stock, and a Jewell trigger. Top it off with a US Optics SN-3 or perhaps a Schmidt und Bender 5-25 PM II scope. That will do for about 6K.

2. Colt Special Combat Gov't for a new duty gun. Tasty, tasty!
3. A Magma Master Caster, with molds for all my cast bullet calibers;
4. (dirty little secret wish coming up!) A Sharps, done up in fancy Claro walnut with all the nice trimmings, a spirit level sight and a tang sight, chambered in .45-120--and at least 500 cases, and all the goodies needed to make paper patched bullets!

What's left can go on reloading components. Yeah, baby! :D :D :D

Edited to add: I might go with a regular blueprinted action for the rifle, or scratch the SCG Colt, if I can find a minty fresh Luger to play with. Gimme, gimme, gimme!!!

It's fun to see how my gun tastes have changed in the past three years. Not to mention that I've bought a few guns over that time...

Old - 2 AR-10s with glass, 2 Steyr M40s, a Pardini PC45, reloader, some training, etc.

New - I'd start out with an Accuracy International AWP, which will run six grand by the time the bipod, magazines, sling, reloading dies, and barrel change kit are taken into account. Maybe five if I run across a used one.

I'd get the paperwork done for two SBR AR lowers and two suppressors, then pick up an AAC M4-2000 for the AR and probably an SRT for the AI. Another three grand done.

The remaining two thousand would be reserved for training and match fees.
