The perfect range arsenal?

I think I may have accidentally acquired the perfect set of revolvers for the range.
A while ago, I bought a cosmetically challenged but mechanically tight S&W Model 14. Then I got a near flawless Model 17. And today I picked up a beautiful Model 28.
These are all 6" versions.
If we're just talking about revolvers, I can't think of a better set to take to the range. Can you?

17 = 22
14 = 38
28 = 357
Maybe only a 29 to round it out. Congrats.

Personal taste, but i've never been a big fan of the K frame .38's since you can get teh same gun in .357 and just shoot .38's anyway.
A "perfect revovler arsenal" to me: For a .38 only I'd drop down to a model 36. Then I'd bring a model 19, and finally a 27/28 or preferably a 29.
My range aresenal typically consists of a Ruger Mark III, a S&W 36 or SP101, and a 27 or 1911. Gives a nice spread of .22/.38/.357 or .22/.357/.45 and a nice spread of frame size and balance.

Every time I hear Arsenal and target shooting in the same sentence it makes me grit my teeth!
I would also pull my hair, but I don't have any.
Arsenal
Noun:
1. A governmental establishment for the storing, development, manufacturing, testing, or repairing of arms, ammunition, and other war material.
2. A stockpile of weapons.
3. A news account of the 12ga shotgun some Wacko used in another school shooting.
IMO: Arsenal, Weapons Cache, and Assault Rifle should all be banned from use by us, politicians, and the news media if they aren't referring to the war in Iraq!

Every time I see someone jack a thread with rude posts spouting off on how they hate something makes me grit my teeth. Take the High Road, don't participate if you don't like it.

Just an awesome Model 29 or 629 would round out your Smith collection well. I have both.
I also have two 14's, 15, 25-2, and a 52-1.
I'm looking for either a 17 or 18 and a 27 to round my Smith collection out.

I usually take my 17-3, my 1950 K-38, Trooper MK III, and a Colt gold cup. I'd like to get a 27 and a 10 shot 617 just because it's a ten shot.

I usually shoot an XDm .40, G27 and .22/45. I am considering thinning out the rest of the safe quite a bit and investing in something else to enjoy.

At one point S&W also offered the 32 Long on a K frame, the M16, and all three were set up to be identical weight. It made a great set, the K Target series.
For me, the M14, M17 and M25-2 make up a good set for target shooting. For field use an M25-5 rounds out the K frames.

Model 60. For snubby fun. 632 Carry Comp would make a fine substitute.
Model 18 ( Four inch .22) Ruger Single six as Plan B.
Model 66 ( Four inch .38/.357) A model 15 would be a suitable substitute.
Model 627 ( Five inch .38/.357) Any other 5 inch N frame would be a suitable substitute.
I don't like full underlugs, I don't like long barrels, they don't balance well for me.
I have a model 18 and a model 66. I had a model 60 until the Australian govt. decided short barrels were evil. The 627 is on my to buy list when funds allow.

I think for me; revolver shooting heaven would look something like:
3" Gp100
6.5" S&W model 27
7.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter
K-22 masterpiece
And plenty of ammo and reactive targets. More then a set but I never claimed to be perfect.

"I think I may have accidentally acquired the perfect set of revolvers for the range."
too good OP to resist a friendly reply...
"it just don't get much better than that".. pert-near-perfect... but no need to quit now, friend
the tough part is learning what fit's YOU, the rest is all gravy
two S&W model 17s, 22LR
one (clone) Taurus model 96, 22 LR
one S&W model 648 WMR
two S&W model 66s, 357
one (clone) Taurus model 66, 357
all 6" K-frames, all with same/similar grips
(not perfect, though, because I will confess, I went to range one day, and was embarrassed upon opening cylinder to find holes were 38/357 size, instead of 22 size... good thing I brought some 38 ammo along.. who woulda' thunk it, always carry a pair of k-frames no matter what else is along for the ride)
and, just for something different, every now and then...
one S&W model 60 J-frame snubbie, 38
one S&W 4" model 63, 22lr
milday's 3" Ruger SP101, 38+P
one Hi Standard Double 9, 22lr/22WMR
milday's Rossi 4" model 851, 38
bad news, the local shop still ain't sold that 6" S&W model 19, lingering there for far too long, but I only got two hands, not eight
good news, ain't never run across a nice 6" s&w model 27, because I couldn't cough up the bucks anyway
then again, "day ain't over with yet"

I too have a 8 3/8 Model 14 that is cosmetically challenged, it fun for anything. A bit of a challenge out of a old duty holster for shooting steel.
A DA only four inch Model 15 that will never grace a collectors safe. I wish my eyes worked better for a four inch gun for range use.
A model 65 that has been drilled and tapped for a Match dot scope and it works fine for 25 yard Bullseye.
May I suggest adding a Model 25 or 625 for your range use. The are great for Steel, Bullseye, IPSC or for days when you need a bit of thud but no pain.
I ended up with three of them and there a real nice revolver for range use.
One always ends up next to the bed for some reason.

Add a S&W M25 in 45 ACP to that list and you will be all set! As far as that Model 14 goes the 6" version is one of the best balanced revolvers every made and one of the most accurate. Enjoy it for the 38 Special round and if you have a need to fire .357's that M28 will soak up more recoil anyway.

I used to think range guns had to have long barrels. 6" being the minimum. One day this Mod 15 snubby came to live with me. Now it goes with me to the range every time I go. 4" seems long now. The 6" 14 does not go as often now. Or the long barrel 44. The 28 and 19 are 4". Three different guns and all can get fed the same. I like it simple

Strange that i'm the only one as of yet mentioned that carry Colt's to the range. Nothing bad here about S&W at all. Used to shoot K frames but changed to Colts. My range revolvers are as follows.
Colt Officer's Model Match .22lr, 6", left handed Thumbrest Herritt's
Colt Officer's Model Match .38 Spl., 6", left handed Thumbrest Herritt's
Colt / King Super Target, Official Police, heavy barrel, .38 Spl. 6", SA only, Left handed Thumbreat Herritt's
Been looking for a Colt / King Super Target in .45LC/.45ACP to round off my revolver's for Bullseye.
And i also shoot 2 Buckmarks, and utilize 2 .45's 1911A1's, (just to add my autos).
As you can see, all models are identical in size, weight is almost matched, and i shoot the same grips. For me i feel that consistency in every "mode" makes for better accuracy. From one stage to another it feels like i'm shooting the same revolver, just different bullets going down range. Just "feels" normal.
