Rem 1100 - Questions

I recently acquired a Rem 1100, 2.75". I am wondering if someone can help me with a couple of questions.

1. Regarding the auto-action: When I cycle rounds through manually, each time I pull the bolt back, it locks in the rear position, and one must push the release button on the underside each time to make the bolt close. My question is - when actually firing, how does the shotgun "know" that you're firing and not manually cycling, such that the bolt does NOT lock back (just simply auto-loads)? In other words, what specifically causes the locking mechanism to not engage when firing? I don't see readily how the action would "know" the difference between firing or dry cycling when the bolt goes to the rear.

2. The cross-bolt safety is horridly stiff. Any simple fix to make it less stiff? Just a little lube?

Thanks.

1. In firing, when the shell stop releases a shell out of the magazine, it whips back to the rear of the lifter fast enough to trip the release. When you do it manually, you are still hauling back on the bolt handle when that happens and the timing is not there.

2. Try oil. Then take it apart and look for burrs, not complicated. Trust yours is not a keylock version.
