I recently acquired a Colt Black Powder Signiture Series 1861 Game Master Musket. Whew, that was a mouthfull...It's basicly a sporterized 1861 Special Musket in .50 Cal. What kind of loads do I put thru this new fangled mutation anyhow? I run 90 grains of FFG with a 320 grain conical in my TC, what about this Colt?

I don't know about the rest of the forum members, but I am still in awe just reading the name.
Undoubtedly the musket guru's will be along shortly with plenty to say. ;)

Sorry... my ignorance on the matter would shine too brightly if I tossed in a comment. :D

I also just bought an 1861 Colt 3 Band Musket Signature Series ($550 unfired), I thought that was a great deal. I haven't received it yet but I have read that the Civil War loading for the .58 caliber Springfield Musket was 60 or 65 grains of black powder behind a 500 grain Minie Ball. I would think that 90 grains would be a bit heavy for the .50 caliber Gamemaster.

Never saw or heard of the Game Master before but it sounds unique.
Could you tell us the twist rate or barrel length?
What a great price for the unfired 3 band!
Pictures of either would be greatly appreciated. :)

The Fifth Edition (2007) of the Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms lists an 1861 Musket by Colt Blackpowder Arms Co, Inc. The name Game Master is not mentioned, however. .50 cal, 40" barrel with 3 barrel bands. All metal parts are bright white finished steel; the stock is oil finished walnut. Manufactured 1995-2002. 100% value is given as $900.
They list two special editions: a 31 1/2" barrel, 2 band carbine and a 1 of 1000 presentation model with wood case.

I have this rifle for a couple of years now. I am loading 85 grains of tripple seven ffg with a 240 grain sabot. Shoots good with this. Did you get a manual with yours? I can't remember what I did with mine. I ahve been trying to find a replacement musket nipple to have a spare. I went deer hunting with mine. Did not see one to shoot this time.

rdelia84- Contact Dixie Gun Works for a replacement musket nipple. I believe the 1861 nipples should work.
