rbernie -

Regarding the recent elimination of the German/Mauser thread. My Dad was with Claire Chennault - 14th Airforce - in China, during WW II. He was shipped off with a uniform and a Garand. They were called the Flying Tigers. There was a point at which, during the massive Japanese advance down the peninsula, they were abandoning several airstrips each day, and literally running South, but still putting planes in the air and fighting North. Their purpose was, in desperate conditions, to fight another day. The guns they used are a piece of history, but only that. Greater is the historical content of WW II. I don't see how you can separate the two, by the simple elimination of a thread which addresses this history. OK. If this forum is only about technical aspects of guns, in modern times, i.e. what Walmart is selling this week so be it. We will be the poorer for it.

Was that a blank verse poem?

don't be ridiculous. there are thousands of open threads on this board discussing historical firearms.

I would have closed it, but I wasn't paying attention as I'm at camp perry this week.

So I assume the thread got out of control somehow? I had read some of it and made a comment. It was interesting as a lot of history (and some not so much history) was discussed.

Oh well. Did it get personal?

We had a little bit of disgusting Nazi worship that needed to be exorcized, a lot of general 'what did Germany do wrong to lose the war' bickering, and even a bit of a geneology lesson about one of our more senior members.

By the way - the thread was not eliminated. I kept every single post that discussed rifles. Sadly, that was not many.

More to the issue at hand - nobody here on THR is stopping anyone from putting their money where their opinions are and starting a WWII historical forum, if they feel so strongly on the matter.

Indeed. But fresh from the lessons of how NOT to do it, the forum rallied and managed to stage a friendly and ON TOPIC discussion:

I love it when a plan comes together... :)
